View Full Version : My future plan for my Marine career!

Ok so I signed for 6 active and 2 reserve (told me I had to sign 8) as 5811. I can't remember the exact code but I remember it only had MP and Correctional Specialist. I will go into boot as a PFC so when I get out I will be PFC and I will do the whole Lcpl deal with referrals once I am doing my MOS schooling. How do yall like the MPs? Everyone tells me I am going to hate my job but I DO NOT want to be like the other douchebags who are 19 y/o's with too much authority and think they are tough ****.
My plan is to do two years as an MP and hopefully get close to E4 then lat move(or whatever it's called) to 0311. Maybe having my higher rank will allow me to pick my postition in the infantry. I really want to carry the M249. So with all this in mind, any advice? I come from a family full of Marines and am not naive to this whole ordeal but still pretty ill-informed.

Why dont you just go in as an 03? You will have to start all over if you go in as an MP. You have better chances of doing what you want starting in the infantry.

My brother (who is in the marines currently) my dad (former marine) and my recruiter all say I should do infantry after I build some rank and whatnot. So I don't get all the crap assignments being a PFC and LCPL. I can go in as a Corporal and get some seniority and maybe have a chance at leading instead of being lead.

Well heres the thing. You are going to be brand new to the job not having the experience. If you go in as an 03 you will learn everything as an infantryman and learn how to lead infantryman. As of now you will be going in as an MP and trying to lead grunts. You might be higher rank, however you will have less experience. I know in my MOS (0261) the lat movers that came in were like SSgts and didnt know dick. Just my $.02.

Thats what I've been told. I just want to experience the MP first so I can use that experience when I get out of the Marine Corps as a Sheriff. But I also REALLY want to be an 03 Marine. I'm torn between three jobs, Grunt, MP, and AAV Crewman. What do you recommend?

You are going to be led no matter what mos you choose. You are also going to get crap assignments in any mos, also known as working parties. If you go into infantry as a corporal you will probably be taking orders from a lance corporal. If you want infantry, then go infantry. I'm not trying to sound negative, but you will learn how to lead by going through the ranks and seeing what leadership style works best for you and the Marines under you.

All I can tell you is that I had my heart set on being an 03. I was talked into doing 02, which I dont regret I have an awesome job right now, however I didnt get what I wanted out of the Marine Corps. I just wanted to be in combat arms. So I would suggest do what you want to do. Plus my friends were told that they should do admin so they would get awesome jobs when they got out. One is a carpenter and the other joined the Army to be a an infantryman. Its your life and its going to be the shortest 4 years ever. Make the most of it and be happy.

In your first enlistment you might have to stay with that MOS until you Re-enlist unless you get lucky.

I totally agree with Cash2053 and devilbones. If you want to be a grunt, be a grunt.

Think about it.......what I am hearing you say is you want to start as an MP, where you'll avoid all the heavy grunt work while you pick up rank, then when you have rank, you just switch over to 03.

Not only will you have the stigma of being a former MP, but you'll also be an inexperienced 03 NCO leading experienced 03 grunts, which means you'll be telling them to do all the heavy work that you avoided.

I wonder what kind of respect and love you'll get from those Marines?

0311s carry the SAW?

I've never heard of anyone lat moving INTO Infantry. It's probably possible, but I see a big problem with it. I would love to do infantry, but not now. Here's why.

Infantry is different than the rest of the Marine Corps. The rank structure is MUCH more rigid. And there is a much greater responsibility in infantry than in any other MOS. If you **** up, Marines die. Well, now that I think about it, if I **** up and the bird crashes, Marines die too, but you get the point. So imagine having a Cpl lat move into infantry with no combat experience. As a Cpl you'll be a squad leader. Could you imagine the chaos? A squad leader with no combat experience telling Marines what to do who have possibly already done 2 deployments or more. I hear about guys lat moving out of infantry, but never in. And for the reason I just stated is probably why.

Become an 03 from the get go if that's ultimately your goal. 0311 is your basic rifleman. 0331 is machine gunner. 0321 is Recon. Those are the only 3 I know. The only one you can get a contract for is Recon. I believe Scout Sniper is contract but don't hold me to it. Everything else is sorted out at ITB while you're there.

The reason I say the rank structure is more rigid is simple. At least for me. As a 6322 Avionics technician, there are times I have to say "No.", to pilots, regardless of rank.

The 19 YO "douchebags" as you refereed to them have earned their Eagle Globe and Anchor. You have not. You are not even a shower shoe, so you do not rate. Maybe you need to make it through boot before you start putting down Marines who have chewed more sand and banged more snatch than you could imagine. For example, the then PFC Richard Weinmaster was only 19 years old when he first earned the Navy cross. Is he one of the "douchebags" you were referring to? It sounds to me like you are trying to circumvent the system and get something for nothing. How about you work for it. And how about you think next time before you spew off at the mouth.

There's no ****ing way you go into Infantry as a corporal and not eat **** all day and night long, especially coming in as a MP. LOL. Any PFC would ring your ass until you cried. In the grunts, rank doesn't matter if you suck. We didn't even respect the new Lt's for at least 6 months. If you want to be an 03, take my advice...go in as a private and learn the ropes...aka get **** on. Then go somewhere else. What a ***** idea, go in as a corporal to avoid the rough part? **** you. That attitude will get you (or worse, someone else) killed some day.

If you come to the infantry from the MP's as a Corporal you might as well get used to being NCO of the Day and being in charge of handing out toilet paper at the barracks. Your fellow NCO's will be all over your ass and the marines junior to you will not respect you.

I carried the SAW when I was a PFC/junior LCPL. If you are planning on using the amazing experience that you gain as an MP, to secure a position of authority in a line platoon, you probably won't be carrying the SAW.

Your plan is pretty bad. If you want to be an 03, enlist as one. Going MP is going to give you a whole different set of skills. Assuming that you could later lat move out of MP to 03, you would be lacking many of the fundamental skills/training that are so necessary. Basically, you would be worthless. We took security force Marines to task for having been out of line platoons, you would be much lower down the totem pole. As someone mentioned, you would probably end up in headquarters, driving the gunny around.

My advice would be to focus on one or the other. If your long range goal is to be a sheriff, focus on that. Donít let the dreams of the M249 dance in your head.

How do you expect to effectively lead a team if you can't relate to all the bull**** that they deal with. Knowing first hand the crap a new grunt has to deal with, and how he handles and reacts to it, plays directly into the way I lead a specific Marine. NCO leadership within the grunts is an entirely different ballgame, more junior Marines to govern and less eyes and hands on from the chain of command.

There are terds everywhere you go. I respect every Marine but some are terds and them being a Marine doesn't kill their egos or habits. My brother happens to be one of those few. And the people who are calling the 19 y/o MP's douchebags are my brother (who is now an MP) my dad (who is a former Marine) and a bunch of my buddies who are all enlisted. I'm not trying to drop them down a peg, I'm just trying to say I don't want to be hated as an MP, such as being a PFC and pulling over a Ssgt and giving him hell about everything just because I could as an MP. My brother does this all the time. Sorry to whoever I might've offended, some of my other posts look offensive but I didn't mean them that way. Plus I have no room to talk mess back at people who have made it to where I hopefully want to be one day. When that day comes, I'll be happy to speak my mind. Now, I will keep it in with a smile.

Ahh I didn't. I never once gave the characteristic of being a "douche" to the age group of 19 year olds. I said I don't want to ACT LIKE a douchebag and be a 19 y/o MP who takes his job too seriously. Such as abusing authority, just because he could. Pulling people over for a routine traffic stop, and having them get out of the vehicle so I can search it on probable cause just to inconvience them for an hour or so. etc....

If you want an 03 slot go get it. Don't expect to jump over at the 2 year mark

Actually if you want to get literal about it I gave the characterics to the douchebag, not the 19 y/o's. "but I DO NOT want to be like the other douchebags" Then I gave the description to the main character (douchebag) of being a 19 year old with too much authority and thinking they are tough sh!t. I didn't know I would have to spell everything out on my post. I thought people could infer my OP to mean what I said it meant. I in fact did not call 19 year olds douchebags. It really dosn't matter what you ment, to say, or how you ment to say it. You called Marines "Douchbags", whether you want to admit to it or not. You keep going on about how your dad, and brother are Marines, and using that as a leg. Personally I don't give a crap who your Dad or Brother are. There Marines, great I'll drink a beer with them any day of the week. However you have no salt compared to the Marines on here, or your Dad and brother, your words mean nothing until you earn the title. Your tone, and mannerisms speak alot for yourself, you are a selfish little kid, who thinks the world revolves around you. You speak in terms that refer to your self, and act like you don't care about others or team work. You talk as if its all about you, and screw the other Recruits, and Marines that get in your way. That kinda attitude will get you know where in life, and especially not in my Marine Corps. Semper:evilgrin:

You gave a reason. You started the thread by calling Marines "douchebags." Regardless of of context, intent, or content, you insulted MY BROTHERS AND SISTERS. Folks who have EARNED their right in my Corps. You have not. No one here is "talking ****" except for you. The internet has granted you a level of ambiguity which would never be afforded in a face-to face conversation. If you were face-to-face with any Marine here, I suspect your tone would change considerably (or we would change it for you). You are a little pee-on whio hasn't accomplished squat. You are riding on the back of you father and brother's accomplishments thus far. That means jack ****. How about you check the attitude, apologize, and start over. If you want help, we will give it...but not to a smart assed kid who talks ****....that is what you are right now. It is up to you to change that.

You and a few others are the only ones on this post that have shown respect. I gave you respect back and we just exchanged attitudes. I never talked sh!t to you. But I did get a little irritated with other people who talked mess at me first for no apparent reason. No disrespect to you whatsoever. And I actually wouldn't mind being face to face with the people on here. I have been in scuffles with Marines before, it wouldn't be the first time and lord knows it wouldn't be the last. So I apoligize for my mouth to YOU and the other few Marines on here who actually answered my question rather than jump on the bandwagon of insults to me for being a poolee. Oh and thanks for recognizing me as a pee-on rather than a skivvy or shower shoe. That shows respect in my book. (not smartass) Ha. Another thing I find funny is I lived on Marine Corps bases and was around Marines all day longer than most of the people on here talking mess to me have even been in the Marine Corps. Lol So no disrespect to you brotha, I stand down.

"Your tone, and mannerisms speak alot for yourself, you are a selfish little kid, who thinks the world revolves around you. You speak in terms that refer to your self, and act like you don't care about others or team work. You talk as if its all about you, and screw the other Recruits, and Marines that get in your way."

You know nothing about me bro. Please explain how I am a selfish little kid and how I care about nobody but myself.

Perhaps the explanation of why someone may think you are selfish lies in your own statements:

I should do infantry after I build some rank and whatnot. So I don't get all the crap assignments being a PFC and LCPL. I can go in as a Corporal and get some seniority and maybe have a chance at leading instead of being lead.

Sounds to me like you think you are either too good or too afraid to do the dirty work. While other grunts out there are busting ass to build a team, you just want to skip out on that and come in as an NCO.

You want your stripes without earning your stripes. You dont want to be seen as a douchbag? Well guess what...if you walk into a grunt platoon as an inexperienced NCO with the attitude that "I didnt get the crap assignments you guys got", and without having done what your men have done, you WILL be that 19 y.o. douchebag.

There's no difference between a 19 y.o. douchebag MP who pulls over a SSGT for no reason, and a 19 y.o. douchebag NCO who pussied out on the hard work and thinks he's got the right to lead a platoon of true grunts.

The Marines need a few good men....not primadonnas.

So your saying your time on a Marine Corps base gives you some special title, a right of passage, special felling, what. Means nothing to me, explain it to me would you. Before you start running your mouth on new topic that you wont win. I won't even go into your "Scuffles with Marines" remark.

Nope...your smartass just continues. Noted. Just remember this is a great resource for help. You have abused it, and used it as a way to extend your own ego. You look like a jackass. You do not know the meaning of respect, and have not extended it to me, nor any other Marine on this forum. I gave you an option to right the wrong. Instead of doing THE RIGHT THING (something EVERY Marine knows how to do) you continued on your smart ass tirade, and made yourself look worse. You make your bed, you lie in it. Nothing you have posted thus far have earned you any respect, cool points, or kudos with anyone here. You have taken yourself down several pegs on the totem pole. Just remember...this thread is viewed by thousands of Marines...some of which may be one of your DI's one day...if you ever make it that far.

No I do not think it gives me a right of passage or special title. Can you read? I said that I thought that it was funny. IMO it is funny, not a right of passage. Anything else you need to get off your chest?

Whatever helps you sleep at night. I'll quit scintillating the image of being a "jackass" to you. Good luck brotha.

I will tell you what helps me sleep at night. Knowing my Corps still weeds out folks who do not know respect, esprit de corps, and honor. Thus far, you have shown you lacked those traits. Hopefully, for you, you can lean a little something before you go to boot. Until then I suggest you work on that slow ass run time. I am a 35 year old fatass who sits behind a desk all day, and I can do better than a 12:50 1 1/2 mile...... That will put me to sleep tonight.......

I'm embarressed by that time. I was in a motorcycle wreck and have been recovering but that's no excuse, it's still slow. Hince the mad face behind the time as I find it embarressing. Good thing you're not one of those guys who get out and let themselves go to waste lol. My uncle is one of those guys, but hell he was a tank crewman in the Army. I knew which branch did the right things and which ones did the wrong. The traits you are giving off are good ones. You give good motivation for terds like me. (I know good and well I'm a terd) Thats a big reason I am a *measley* little poolee for now. I want to better myself mentally and physically. But forreal sorry I was a terd to you. My anger gets the best of me 99.9% of the times, I'm working on it.

Don't go to boot camp with an anger attitude, or you'll find yourself in trouble real quick.
I'm not being a smart a$$ by saying this, but sometimes for as much as you want to get the last word in to prove yourself, you have to learn when to keep your trap shut and move on.

Yes I know. My dad always beats the sh!t out of me because of my mouth. I am going to try my best to chill out through boot camp and just slide under the DI's radar.

Yeah, that's right. Once you've EARNED the title and become a Marine, you can call them DI's all you want. How about showing some respect by calling them Drill Instructors, they've EARNED it.
My brother is a retired Marine GySgt and a former Drill Instructor, and I don't even say DI to him.
When you're going through recruit training, try calling your Drill Instructors DI.....you'll be their best friends through recruit training.

Once again, didn't mean to offend you. Just didn't think it made that big of a deal. You are the only Marine I've seen that takes offense to that type of stuff.
