I'm looking for a poem about being a Marine... something like
"I was he that no one else could be....."
Ironic that I don't remember the rest.... only the most important part... :D

I think that this is what you might be thinking of, Top.
Soldier
I was that which others did not want to be.
I went where others feared to go
I asked nothing from those who gave nothing
And reluctantly accepted that thought of
Eternal loneliness . . . should I fall.
I have seen the face of terror;
Felt the stinging cold of fear;
And enjoyed the sweet taste of a moments' love.
I have cried, pained, and hoped . . .
But most of all, I have lived times
others would say are best forgotten.
At least someday I will be able to say
That I was proud of what I was
A Soldier.

GunnerMike, I have seen this start out with "Soldier" and, or, "Marine"!

I found the poem on Sgt Grit's site, www.grunt.com, and it was originally posted with Soldier so I didn't think it proper to change it. We are after all Soldiers of the Sea.
