OKINAWA CITY — Three Marines and one airman were in Japanese custody over the weekend in separate incidents of trespassing and theft.

The three Marines — two lance corporals and a private first class — were spotted taking a case of beer, a bottle of vodka and a bottle of lime liquor from a parked van at 10:40 p.m. Friday in the Uechi district of Okinawa City, a police spokesman said.

The alcohol was valued at 6,710 yen, about $58.

A duty officer at the Okinawa City police station said the Marines were all in their early 20s and told police they had bought the alcohol elsewhere. They were being held at the station on suspicion of theft.

Also being held by police in Okinawa City was a 27-year- old airman who was found asleep on top of a wooden shack built on the roof of a house in the city’s Chuo district.

He was taken into custody on suspicion of trespassing at 5 a.m. Saturday. A police spokesman said the airman claimed he did not know why he was on top of the shack or how he got there because he had been drunk.
