I have a Question on a subject that has peaked my interest for any knowledgable Marines out there. When did the Marine Corps start calling helicopters, Choppers? In Nam in 66' & 67' we called them Birds or by there designation...CH 34, CH 46 or CH 53, we did call the gunships Hueys however. The last two years of my enlistment I was at New River Air Facility and they called everything that flew a Bird including helicopters or by there designation. Im thinking it was a term originated by the army. Anyway any help will be appriciated

it was always "Helo" (hee-lowe) that i heard. maybe once in a while "Whirly Bird" from the fixed wing Marines. LOL Mostly though by the last digit of the model type such as 46 or 53 or "huey"

I never heard our birds called choppers either. Like Squish said it was either "birds", "46", "53", etc.
I also haven't heard anyone call them choppers since joining the Army.

I have heard the term "chopper" many times but it was mainly Soldiers saying it when they were referring to the Huey and that other little helo they use for recon/spotting. I can't recall ever hearing a Marine call any rotary wing a chopper.

Choppers!

I think I 1st heard it in a movie, or on a TV show.

It sucked at the time, and sucks today.

I also see poolees use it, but then again, they also worry about sunglasses and other such important stuff.

A close friend worked on the wing side as a metal smith at K-bay. He always referred to them as airplanes. It seemed kind of weird to me but I guess was a fairly commen term in his unit. We on the grunt side always said either birds or helos.

Same here, in the squadron, it was bird or plane.

When talking of other types, it was as above, 46's, 53's, 34's, Hueys.
