View Full Version : I'm in the Army. I made the wrong decision.

I'm an 11B Infantryman in the Army. I love the Infantry, but am totally dissapointed with the Army. The PT, Marksmanship, discipline, pride and overall skill is completely out done by the Marines.
No one is proud to be in the Army. The discipline is only slightly better than that of a college football team, in the Infantry at least. The rest of the Army might as well be high schoolers.
There is a Marine detachment in Fort Knox where I am stationed with the 1st Infantry Division- and they are amazing in every aspect. They are warriors, and I don't even think they are even Infantryman.
Most Infantrymen in the army aren't.
We are weak, undisciplined and rely far too much on our "superior" technology and weaponry, when most can't pass a PT test to save their life. Basic training has truly become a Summer Camp. None of us know our history, or even care for that matter.
It hurts to even look at most of my Infantry brothers, who show up to work un motivated and cry when we stay an few minutes later than we are supposed to. We get so many days off, leave work so early, and still we complain how much we work.
I never hear a Marine complain about the Marines. I never see a Marine that's not motivated. I never see a Marine that can't stay in step during drill and ceremony.
And what's worse, is that the Army calls the USMC "stupid". Like, you guys have no intelligence. That for some reason, being in the army makes you smart.
Yet most of us are even afraid to get our shoes a little dirty. And when they do get dirty, we don't even clean them. Marines are clean and ready- the army is not. The army experiences stress when they deploy- Marines experience it the first day of boot camp.
Marines make the Army Rangers look bad. Why did I join the army, then? Because my Father didn't want me to join the Marines. He called them stupid jarheads, that I would die a foolish death if I were to deploy with them. And I respect my father... but he was wrong.
I've been in the Army for only 8 and a half months and I already think all of this. How can I last the rest of my 4 years? Watching the Marines grow stronger every day while we take breaks and relax and get our early days off?
What should I do? Can I switch to the Marines, somehow? I'll go through boot again. I want to. I want to be forged into a Marine Infantryman. A warrior.
Or, do I have to wait my 4 years, and then join? I'll wait, if I have to. Every soldier in the army has said that Marines don't let prior service army guys in. Is this true?
Thank you for your help.

You can go in the Corps after your 4 years. I did 3 years in the Army before I joined the Corps, and I fuggin hated it. I know where you are coming from. You will have to go back through boot camp again, and will probably not be put in any higher than PFC (E-2). Making the move to the Corps was the best decision I made in my life.

Thank you, Marine.
I don't even care if I get sent back to E1... I just so badly want to be a Marine.
I'm also glad to hear a prior army soldier say that the USMC is a better choice. It makes me feel that I have much to look forward to.

I have never met a Prior Soldier turned Marine, that had anything good to say about the Army. In Bravo Co, at 2nd Tracks we had a Prior Soldier turned Marine. He always said it was the best decision he ever made, he got promoted quick with his prior TIS, and the fact that he was squared away. Although he did look funny when he was a LCpl with his Army Ribbons he was authorized to wear. I think he had an Army Comm Medal, and Army Achievement Medal. Plus he had a star on his NDSM I cant remember entirely, but he had a few. I say go for it, I'm not sure if you said it already, but how much time you got left on your Army of One contract. :D. Am I, as a Marine suppose to feel superior because of your cute little rant?

You make it sound like the USMC is this perfect paradise which does no wrong. Who are you kidding?

What amazes me is that you have been in your unit for about five months and here you are talking crap. What does that say about your character? Perhaps the problem with the Army is people such as the one in your mirror.

Son, first relax, second realize that nothing is perfect. Most Marines here have friends in the Army from high school or whatever. You are young and your expectations are high. Most of us understand. I had the same expectations when I first enlisted in the Corps. Find people of a positive motivation as yourself and make the next 3 yrs the best of your life. Then if the Corps is what you want go for it. I love the Corps and it means the world to me. But, you made a commitment to the Army. Fulfill it, completely. The things you learn being an exemplary soldier will carry with you the rest of your life. Make more than the best of it! 8 months is not a enough time to be disgruntled. Every Marine here has had there time in the SUCK and their fair share of F-ck, F-ck games. In the end, we love it! Or at least our bros with us! Read Tommy Franks book. it is very good. Take alot of pride in yourself and the Army. See Were you are at in 3 yrs.

Aye, stick with it and do your best. You may find after another year or so that it will improve and you'll like it more. After your Army tour is over, then enlist in the Marines. As far as Prior Army not accepted in the Marine Corps, that sounds like a whole lotta hogwash to me. We had a former Army soldier in my platoon in Boot Camp, he did fine in fact, I believe he was a Squad Leader. 5-8 months is just not enough time to see the total circumstances of the Army and yourself in the Army. I knew several other ex Army, Ex Navy, ex Air Force during my time in the Marines As Zulu said, Emulate the Marines you know. They will notice and so will most others. Hang Tough.

There is no way this is real. If you want better PT, go to the gym. Plenty of Marines can't PT.

My cousin is in the Army, and proud, so you're wrong there.

There is a reason alot of guys act like high schoolers, and that would be because they just came from high school, same as alot of young Marines.

Sounds like you like there Marines you are stationed with a little too much. Hopefully Obama lets you be accepted.

Basic is may be longer and harder than the Army's, but you'll go through alot harder **** in the fleet, and I'm sure youll do harder **** with the Army than we did at PI or SD.

Plenty of Marines don't know Marine Corps history, nor do they care.

ALot of Marines come to work unmotivated, and ***** when we leave early.

You call us dumb, we call you gay. It's all the same.

I don't like getting my shoes dirty when I drive my car, it's too hard to clean.

Plenty of Marines never wash their cami's and live like pigs. Hence why field days are still held.

Consistently stressful enviroments are just that, stressful. Be glad if you're not stressed out right now, jeeze.

To be honest, I don't know what Army Rangers do all day, but I doubt my trouble ticket entering skills make them look bad.

I don't really care about your father, so i'll forget that one.

Last but not least, talk with a recruiter or your Career counseler maybe ?

There. Finished. Seriously though, it's all about attitude. Even in the Marines, people with ****ty attitudes generally don't enjoy it.

I mean, if you want to be a Marine, then great, but don't come shi t ting all over the Army because it's not what you thought it would be.

I'm prior service Army. I actually transferred half-way through my contract with the stipulations I would become a RADAR Marine, and I would have my rank dropped back to E-1.

What you said is complete bull****. I know plenty of soldiers who are some squared away motherf*****s. They take pride in their job AND in their country.

Remember, the Army has their job. They do what they do best. They are a policing force, an occupying force.

Look up USMC in Wikipedia then look up the Army. You will notice the differences in what these two branches were founded to do.

I'm proud of my time as an Army Soldier. I know that I did the best I could to serve my country as one. I did everything in my power as a 42A (Human Resource Specialist) to make sure the people in my command were ready to deploy and had their personal lives straightened away.

I've known a LOT of soldiers that I'm proud I've gotten to know. They work hard, and always strive to be their best in what they do.

Yes, we talk **** about the Army. Just like the Army talks **** about us. I know this first hand. But you HAVE to realize that its all ****s and giggles. When it comes down to it I know that if I was thrown into a situation with soldiers overseas, that I would cover their asses just as they would cover mine. Yes, its a rivalry, but it should never get past something friendly.

There's nothing wrong with being Motivated, you just need to keep it in perspective.

When you become a Motard is when you take things TOO far, but I don't see where MD figured that comment was Motard material, you practically need to live/work with someone for a bit to make that determination.

For (1) - Yeah sure, I guess.

You are being an azz and making the rest of us look like pecker challenged bullies.

There is no reason for you to attack the soldier because he realized the Army is simply not enough for him.

Was being a nasty civilian enough for you? I suppose your recruiter should have told you to go fvck off because you thought Marine Corps life would be better than flipping burgers or cleaning toilets or whatever you did before the Marine Corps.

What about those Marines who felt like the regular grunts weren't enough for them and they went on to become STA, ANGLICO, Force or Bn Recon? I guess they're all worthless pieces of shyt too. All motards.

Only a the most simple mind actually thinks life is ideal anywhere. It takes an even more simple mind plus some shallow/false hubris to feel like they need explain that it isn't.

Jesus Christ, someone wants to be a Marine, what a stupid fvcking decision, eh? I suppose only Marines should ever want to be Marines.

I guess the job of an 0215 NCO is to go outside and talk. That alone should confuse the fvck out of the bad guys.

We all became Marines because we wanted the challenge and to know that we could measure up to the best and be with the best. This guy thought the army was something it wasn't and want's more. That's a decidedly Marine quality.

You're the shyt bird to begrudge him that.

1 - It acutally meant "Thanks for breaking it down for me so I could see where I was an *******, because you could have just been very general about it. Oohrah!" but you are close!

2 - If you have a small penis, well, I'm sorry.

3 - Had he just realized that the Army was wrong, it would have been cool. Instead he just talked **** about them, said they had no honor, blah blah whater, read it agian yourself.

4 - No, being a civilian wasn't enough, hence me being a Marine.

5 - I think recruiters have to recruit, I could be wrong though because I have never been one.

6 - I sold shoes.

7 - If those grunts **** all over their fellow grunts in becoming that Recon Marine or whatever, then yeah, **** them too. I don't mean just simple trash talk, I mean saying there was no honor in being "just a grunt", kinda like the Army dude said.

8 - You don't have to be motarded to want to progress in your Marine Corp career. Also, that was a joke. Get the **** over it.

9 - So if you are simple minded for thinking that something you know nothing about it absolutely perfect, then it is wrong for someone who actually does it to let you know otherwise. You may not have liked what I said about the Marine Corps, but can you honestly say that the **** I talked about isn't here ? You probably think that I am a total ****bag for my post, and since perception is reality, there you ****ing have it. What I said must be true, you dumb ****.

10 - I never said anything about him wanting to be a Marine, I just said that he shouldn't be disrespecting the Army, because whether you believe it or not, they still deserve a little bit of ****ing respect.

11 - Who the **** and what the **** is an 0215 ?

12 - Kudos to him for wanting to be challenged more so that the Army can challenge him. Please, Army guy, talk with a recruiter, follow the advice the other Marines on here gave you, do what ever it is you need to do to become a Marine. Life is only worth living if you are enjoying it, whether that be as a civilian, a Soldier, a Marine, or what the **** ever. However, I am sure that most people were able to realize those dreams without completely disrespecting the Army, or any of our other Armed Forces. It's perfectly fine to be ****ed off ad annoyed and whatever else, but there is no reason to take it too far.

Last but not least...

13 - **** You.

Now that's being an ******* for you.

I just have to jump in here. So, if I have this straight, you tell off the Army guy for talking **** about the Army, and then you turn around and talk **** about the Corps? What the ****? And to top it all off, Marines here are trying to police their own and let you know you may have been out of line and you jump in their ****? Again, what the ****? Last I checked, those of us who rate a bloodstripe have an obligation to lead by example. That **** does not stop just because you are not talking to your Marines.....it applies 24 ****ing 7....even on the internet. Your **** poor attitude shows **** poor leadership. It is no wonder you have sub standard Marines in your unit (you know, the ones who don't have great PFT scores, and ****ty attitudes you were talking **** about?). **** poor leaders have **** poor Marines. How about trying that "lead by example" ****, and get a better ****ing attitude. Jackass.

So what if this Army soldier wants to be a Marine, what's the big deal? If he wants to switch branches, I say go for it.

What would Chesty think if he came in here and seen you guys arguing over petty sh!t? We are Marines, Rah!

Oh my god, I never said anything bad about the Corps, lol. I was simply saying that the crap he deals with now, you still have to deal with in the Marines. Have you honestly never seen a Marine with a bad attitude towards the Corps ? Have you honestly never seen a Marine who was out of shape ? Have you honestly never seen Marines who were immature ? I'm not talking **** about any Marine like this either. I've had to work with plenty Marines who couldn't pt, but could still get their job done 100 times better than that 300 PFTer. I was simply saying that the Marine Corps is just as diverse as the Army. I am sorry if you didn't get that out of my post, honestly. I really didn't think I needed to break it down for you. I also said, if you want to join the Marines, then great !

As for jumping into his ****, if you notice, I changd my posts, and my stance, and he still wanted to talk crap. Like Commdog said, if he wants to switch branches, go for it! I believe we had a discussion about respecting all of the branches of the armed forces in another thread, which he clearly did not do in his post. You guys jump onto people for not filling out their profiles, and capitalizing the word Marine. I get ****ed over other things. One of those things would be getting right back into your face when you get into mine.

I believe my leadership style and my attitude are fine, dick.
