Good morning,
I wanted to know if anyone has knowledge about 2311 Ammo Tech?
I found out my MOS is Ammo Tech a few weeks ago and have only been able to find out that I'll be dealing with ammo, cant find anything else on it.
Does anyone have some specifics?
And what about the Enlisted Ammunition Specialist Course in Redstone, Alabama, how long is it?

Rains,
Let me first say Semper FI, Devil Dog. Next, your Ammo school is about 2 months or less, I was there in 1993, might be different now. Really freaking cold rainy, if you are going during winter or fall. If you can hook yourself up with some cold weather gear for civilian clothes and see if you can get supply to hook you up with cold weather clothes.
What you will learn there is a little of everything about being a ammo tech, mostly dealing with the ASP (Ammunition Supply Point), they hardly teach you anything about being a field ammo tech, that's a lot of OJT. During school you'll get to use some blasting caps and if you're lucky some C-4 and TNT. Most likely they will still have the fork lift course and that can be fun.
Last I heard MCD still gets the older barracks, the Army gets the condos. Yes you are going to be surrounded by Army. But stay close to your Devil Dogs and you'll have some fun with them. Friendly inter service rivalry.

If you know what unit you are going to, may give you a better idea what you will be doing. If you are a Ammo Tech at a ASP things are pretty good most of the time but gets tedious and promotions are slow and rare. You could be a Lcpl for a few years.
If you are a field ammo tech, things are always busy but the job is tougher, and if you get the count wrong its your ass.
I was with a artillery unit and that really sucked due to the rounds weighing just a little less then me. But the counts were very easy. If you are with a infantry unit you'll will have to keep up with the grunts but if you are lucky you'll be in a humvee most of the time. Counting each individual round will drive you crazy, always remember the phrase, "Expend all remaining".
The nice thing about being a field Ammo Tech is the access to the dunnage, 40mm, small arms, and fuse cans. HQ, supply, Admin, and your officers are going to hit you up like crazy for these cans. Use them as currency and reserving favors, way worth it.
Also, if things are still the way it was when I was there, the girls in that area love Marines over the Army. Oh ya, hope you are single. Don't fall in love with the "barracks rats". Always find out the girls last name and check her against the visitor log. It will give a idea what you're dealing with.
I hope this helps you out, brother and good luck.

When I worked in the Division Ordnance Office at Camp Pendleton there were numerous 2311's working there. Typeing and posting to ammo control cards. It's much like the supply field, except you are dealing with ammo.

I was stationed at camp Lejuene. I was at Red Stone Arsenal when the Marine barracks were bombed in Beirut. I was on two med floats 22nd MEU and the 26thMEU off the coast of Lybia there were not a lot of field techs we were always on the go you will be able to identify old and new ammo transport and safety the wait at the ammo dump can be long some battalions you work at S-4 some ordinance when not in field a lot of down time on float I was in charg of inventory of all the ammo that was going inland in first wave if mission to go into Lybia had not been called off less than 48 hrs till boots on ground. Just remember keep your records straight and respect the explosives you will do fine.

I always love this, talking to someone on a five year old thread, like he's still here reading this stuff. This is a new fad here, bringing up old old old threads.

I was at redstone arsenal in february 1974 thru april. Rainy, and very cold. Got hit in april with a tornado, that did a huge amount of damage. We were at the tin city barracks, which escaped major damage, but the brick army barracks and classrooms got hit hard. I never forget that motorcycle sitting way up on the roof of the brick building. As usual the marines got stuck cleaning up the mess as the army sipped on there drinks. Had lots of fun there, back in the day as a 17 year old.
