BEAUFORT, S.C. (AP) - Marine recruits at a South Carolina base have to undergo a rigorous 54-hour endurance test called The Crucible to graduate basic training.

On Tuesday, their dogs will undergo testing to prove they're worhty of a place at Parris Island.

Animal experts from the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals will test more than 100 pit bulls, Rottwilers and canine-wolf mixes owned by Marines to see if they may remain on the base.

Such dogs may no longer stay on Marine bases but owners may get waivers if their pets pass behavior assessments. With the waiver, dogs may stay on base until 2012.

Experts are assessing more than 100 dogs belonging to Marines from the Parris Island recruit depot, the Beaufort air station and the Beaufort Naval Hospital.
