About 50 children of U.S. troops killed in Iraq and Afghanistan will be given a medal from the nation's top military official at a Capitol Hill remembrance ceremony honoring the slain warriors and their families.

An estimated 3,000 family members are expected to attend the Sept. 26 tribute sponsored by the White House Commission on Remembrance, an independent government organization.

Joint Chiefs chairman Adm. Mike Mullen will award the special medals to children of soldiers, sailors, pilots and Marines. At least 4,344 members of the U.S. military have died in the Iraq war since it began in March 2003, according to a regularly updated Associated Press count. At least 757 members have been killed in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Uzbekistan as a result of the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan in late 2001. The Associated Press
