After bootcamp & MCT I'm going to 29 Palms in California for communications. I'm wondering what were aloud to bring or recommendations to bring their. Obviously I know not to take much but I was wondering if I can bring my phone, iPod, laptop.

Thank you.

You can bring anything your allowed, which is a Phone, ipod and a laptop.

I think you should worry about becoming a Marine first..that's just me..

I'm just planning ahead, so I know what not to sell of mine and if I should keep my phone contract I have with Verizon.

believe me you need NOTHING anymore, especially after boot, you realize everything you have now you probably will not get to take with you.

Maybe your POV, your phone for sure. Laptop makes good pass time, or maybe just do it with your buddies.

The formula is, less bills, more fun, less crap, more freedom.

I dont know what MOS you're going into but, since form 29 palms cant be INF, all I know is I need nothing but what the Corps issues me.

Simple.

Yeah I'm hoping for 0651 which is data network specialists (communications). All I really want to bring with me to MOS is phone, iPod and laptop so if I can bring those items I'd be fully content.

I just finished up Comm School at the stumps. Anyways, you can not have a POV unless you're there for a longer time (not sure which MOS). Basically, you could have anything you want, or buy anything you want as long as it fit inside your wall locker or secretary. The only thing not allowed in the rooms are females and alcohol.

You leave straight from MCT to Comm School, so you probably won't have everything anyways, but you'll find yourself at the MCX buying stuff all the time.

Come on devil! Females are ALWAYS welcomed, not allowed but welcomed. Just dont get caught.

I don't remember anyone in our class who dared to bring up a female. We were to scared at that point of our USMC career. Definitely not worth the risk.

See that is what's wrong with the Corps today. When I first came in we took some chances and had some fun. Had a ton of beers and meet a ton of women. Yes, some of those women came back with us. I was brought up in the Corps by an old school GySgt. If we messed up, it wasn't about pushing a pen. I joined the Corps for various reasons, and one was it's history. Good and bad history. Like Chesty Puller once said,"Take me to the brig, I want to see REAL Marines".

I didn't serve in "todays" Corps. Times change and with that the USMC will change. It has nothing to do with taking chances or not taking them.

The USMC can't be like what it was many years ago today. Different times require different rules.

I serve in "todays" Corps. Sure it can be the same, but in my 10+ years it's changed a lot. Some good and some bad. Anyways we are getting off subject. Go Notre Dame!!!

I'm in 29 Palms right now in Comm school as a 0651. Bring what your issued. If you need anything else get it mailed here. I wouldn't recommend getting to much sent though, just remember when you leave everything goes with you. People are always selling their TV's, sound systems, and things like that for way less than they paid just because they can't take it with them. Dizark were you top of your class and get meritorious Lance? I could have swore you were a PFC not to long ago.

No, I was not meritorious. My promotion to LCpl was from my 9 months TIG.

However, I held a 99.2% academic rating (I was third in class), and received a 4.6 Pro and a 4.3 Con. The thing that brought me down was my PFT as my lack of pull ups really kill my score. However, I didn't think a PFT was going to weigh so much in Comm School for an overall grade.

Hey how do you like 0651, that's the MOS I want to get. Also how do you like 29 Palms, can you tell me some cool things there is to do on free time?

You are not allowed to have POV in MCCES B Co. A and C co allow their students to have POV since some are there for a year or more.

Ipod and laptops are fine, but keep them locked up if you are not around. Don't get CRT TVs while you're there; if you can't take it on a plane easily when you leave, don't buy it from the PX.

Bring a few items of civilian attire. I estimate that you'll be there around early May based on your ship date. Expect weather to be in the 90s and up. In July, the temperatures can reach 120.

The temperature wasn't really that bad. Sure, we had 110+ degree weather but since it's dry heat and not humid like the East Coast, it was good. You will PT in the mornings from about 0600 to 0700. On Fridays (I was 0621), we ran section runs and once a month is a company run. You'll be running a lot and much further than in boot camp. You'll find yourself running up and down hills and sand. It isn't bad but can suck.

Good luck

To possibly help figure out which company you will go to:
A Co) If your Occ field starts with 28XX and 59XX
B Co) 06XX
C Co) 59XX goes here after they take their basic courses at A Co.

If you end up at A Co or C Co, you WILL be eligible for TMO. That means you can get people to move all of your crap to your new duty station for free!

But my suggestion for now is bring ONLY the stuff you need for MCT. When you get to comm school they'll give you a mailbox so you can have everything you want mailed to you.

OP said he was a 0651 so he's going to be in B Co (which absorbed D Co.)

C Co. also instructs 72xx MOS. The 72xx do not go to A Co. first.

B Co does not get TMO benefits so when you leave MOS school, you are moving yourself. Don't get stuff that won't fit in your seabag(s) and/or cannot bring on a plane or bus. Laptop computer and iPod are fine, but no desktops if you are in B Co.
