HAVELOCK — Four Marines who witnessed a crash Monday morning pulled the driver from his partially submerged car and performed CPR until help arrived.

N.C. Highway Patrol Trooper J.A. Magana praised the four Cherry Point Air Station Marines, saying they “went beyond the call of duty to assist a motorist who was submerged in water.”

He identified the Marines as Staff Sgt. Carlson, Cpl. Hansen, Sgt. Lyman and Sgt. Bailey, all members of VMA-231. Magana did not have their first names

The Marines were in a vehicle traveling behind the car when they saw it crash on Lake Road three miles south of Havelock at about 8:30 a.m. Magana said the motorist was traveling east on Lake Road and had trouble when he entered a right-turning curve.

“The driver over-corrected, lost control and overturned into a water-filled ditch,” Magana said.

Magana said the car was submerged in about three to four feet of water. He said the Marines forced open the doors and cut the seatbelt to get the motorist out of the car.

“They performed CPR until first responders arrived,” Magana said.

Magana said the fast action of the Marines might have helped save the driver’s life. The man, who was not identified pending notification of relatives, was first taken to CarolinaEast Medical Center and transferred to Pitt County Memorial Hospital. His condition was not immediately available.

“The action of these men is above and beyond the call … if they didn’t stop the driver would have succumbed to his injuries right away,” Magana said.
