VMR-1 Search and Rescue crew practices pick-ups

9/9/2009 By Cpl. Alicia R. Giron , Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point

The Search and Rescue crew of Pedro, with Marine Transport Squadron 1’s HH-46D, conducted rescue training missions, Aug. 31.

During the flight, crew members flew over the Neuse River and Cherry Point for two hours in search of any personnel in need of help as part of their regular training.

“We generally try to go out on training missions two to three times a week,” said Capt. Brian P. Santucci, the squadron’s operations officer. “It gives the Marines more insight on their job in a search and rescue mission.”

In conjunction with the range sweeps over the Neuse River, the SAR crew was given a scenario where a victim was unconscious, seeking medical help and had to be evacuated from the area.

“Being the medical asset to the crew, we do a lot of training here that involves energy medical response,” said Petty Officer 1st Class Ray Munn, a SAR corpsman with the squadron. “When we get the call someone needs our help, we’re ready to go within ten minutes.”

In addition to VMR-1’s military search and rescue duties, the squadron also serves the local community with its medical evacuation and SAR capabilities.
