The Motor City Chapter of the Women Marines Association's new scholarship honors women Marines who have died in Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom.

Eight women Marines have died in Iraq or Pakistan while serving on convoys, in Humvees, in engineering units and on aircraft crews. They worked in combat logistics, communications and public affairs. One was a helicopter pilot.

They are Maj. Megan McClung, Capt. Jennifer Harris, Sgt. Jeannette Winters, Cpl. Jennifer Parcell, Cpl. Ramona Valdez and Lance Cpls. Casey Casanova, Holly Charette and Juana Navarro-Arellano. All are being honored by the Fallen Warrior Women Marines Association Memorial Scholarship, administered by WMA national that begins in 2011.

"It is our hope that we will be able to raise the funds needed to make sure that it is a perpetual scholarship and we will keep their memories alive," Mary Merritt, of Romeo said. "To make this happen we will need to raise $35,000.

"Our goal is to be able to present this scholarship at the WMA national convention in 2010 in Denver. We hope to assure that each year, as we give a scholarship, the recipient stops to realize that it is through the sacrifice of our brave young men and women they are able to lead the lives they do."

Scholarship guidelines are at: www.womenmarines.org

The WMA chapter holds a golf outing on Sept. 19 at Selfridge Air National Guard Base. A shotgun start is at 11 a.m. at Mulligan's on base. Cost is $100 per golfer or $390 for a foursome that includes lunch and buffet dinner.

"Raffles and silent auctions will be part of the event. There is even a $10,000 hole-in-one prize," Merritt said.

Golf registrations are available online at http://www.womenmarinesmichigan.org/FallenWarrior.htm. The nonprofit WMA chapter needs hole sponsors and auction items.

WMA members work to preserve and promote the history and traditions of women Marines in particular and the Marine Corps in general.

"We volunteer within our communities and provide assistance to those veterans in need along with conducting programs for charitable and educational purposes," Merritt said.

Commemorating 9/11

There is free admission with a coupon to Gibraltar Trade Center North in Mount Clemens for a 9/11 commemoration. Contact Patrick Daniels at (586) 246-0876 or the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 154 Veterans Support Center at (586) 776-9810 for a flier with the coupon.

On Friday, hundreds of motorcycles will leave at 6:30 p.m. from American Legion Post 4, 401 N. Groesbeck Highway, and proceed to the trade center for a ceremony marking the anniversary of the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.

There will be police and firefighter cycles and other vehicles, a program, and a procession around the trade center.

"We would love to see all our citizens come out and remember the people who died on that day and to show the terrorists that they didn't win," Daniels said. "We are still here walking."

The "America Supports You Freedom Walk" is a national tradition that calls on people to reflect on the lives lost in the attacks, remember those who responded, honor our veterans past and present, and renew our commitment to freedom and the values of our country.

The tradition was born when Pentagon employees, seeking a way to honor the victims of the attack on the Pentagon and their families, and pay tribute to those who responded to that attack as well as those who serve, organized a walk from the Pentagon to the National Mall.

The names of 169 Michigan casualties from Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom will be read, including the latest casualties in Afghanistan, Cpl. Nicholas R. Roush, 22, of Middleville who died Aug. 16, and Pvt. 1st Class Eric W. Hario of Monroe who died Aug. 29.
