The Marine Corps Exchange aboard Camp Lejeune has plans to get bigger and better.

The Main Exchange, located next to the Camp Lejeune Commissary on Holcomb Boulevard, will see a 40,000 square foot expansion in 2010, said Carlton Mencer, retail director with Marine Corps Exchange.

Currently, the Exchange is housed in two buildings: The Main Exchange houses clothing, electronics and jewelry, among other items, while the Hadnot Point Annex, located at building 84, carries athletic equipment and toys.

“The plan is basically to develop a one-stop-shopping kind of environment. … Plus, when we do combine the two stores into one there will be some deficiencies realized by doing that as well,” he said.

Mencer expects one of the realizations to include how much was spent on overhead costs. He said the expansion is projected to cost roughly $20 million.

Construction, which is scheduled to begin next summer, will take approximately a year to complete, Mencer said.

“It’s more than just an addition. It’s basically a facelift of the entire facility,” Mencer said.

The Main Exchange building, which was built in 1993, will be renovated after the addition is complete, he said. The addition will house the exchange while renovations are underway.

“We’re going to try to lessen (interruptions) to the greatest extent possible, but you can’t have a project of this magnitude without some discomfort,” Mencer said.

The 40,000 square foot expansion will be added to the right of the food court, Mencer said.

Camp Lejeune will also gain two new Marine Marts: one on N.C. 172 and one at Stone Bay, Mencer said.

Construction of the Marine Mart on N.C. 172 is expected to begin in January and be complete by the end of 2010, he said. The Stone Bay store is also expected to be under construction in 2010 but the dates have not yet been confirmed.
