Hey,
My name is Clay and I am 16 years old soon turning 17. I have been highly interested in the military services for many years. This last year I have put a lot of thought into what I want in life. I have looked into every military branch, the USMC seems to be what gets and keeps my attention.

I am asking for any advice like: If the USMC seems right for me, What jobs seem to suit me, basic lifestyle in some jobs, etc.

As already stated I am 16 years old. I am about 5' 8" and 125 lbs. I am a very dedicated, self motivated person. I always tend to put others before myself and do my best not to let anyone down.

I am a very active person. I usually find myself training for wrestling, mountain biking, swimming, hunting, and hanging with friends. I feel I am in very good physical condition.

I have very good skills with computers (anything from graphics to building a PC to coding). Even though I am skilled with PC's doesn't mean I am interested in a full on PC job of that sort. I am interested in some combat.

So far I have looked into a few USMC MOS. What hold my interest so far are USMC Recon and a Intelligence Specialist. Please give me your take on those and any other possible MOS you think could suit me.

I have been told to make sure I am joining for the right reasons.
Here is why I want to join:
I believe in what this country stands for, someone has to protect that and I feel I am one to do so.
I truly feel a brotherhood within the USMC, I want to be a part of it.
I love this country, I love my family, I love my friends. I fight for them.

I am planning on graduating early this year. It is not official, but I have every class right now I need to graduate this year. If anyone as some info, advice, etc. about this all, please let me no.

Thanks guys.

It would be great if the Marines on this site knew who they would be giving answers to. Tell us about yourself by filling out your profile, and then reading the site rules in the Poolee forum and the Ask A Marine forum.

Input. Come back when you've talked to a recruiter. Then you'll have something to say beyond wishful thinking.

Dude, seriously, with everything you've talked about and your background, you would be so perfect for either a PRC-E1 operator or Flight Line manager.

Not many Marines can be selected for either but I think you could do it based on your post. The PRC-E1 is a new Comm Marine who is usually sh1t hot and is able to tell all the other Marines in his section, even NCO's what to do. The Flight Line manager is another good one where you get to track how much flight line has been used, ship the flight line anywhere the Marine Corps goes and sometimes if you're lucky, you can even measure and lay the flight line by yourself. It's actually a fun job and another one of the perks is you work directly for the General so nobody can tell you what to do. You'll even get to travel with the General because he'll need flight line wherever he goes and you'll likely see combat as well if that interest you.

Let me know if those interest you and I'll give you the number for the recruiter of those so you can find out more.

I guess for some, I should've explained myself better.
I was correcting the young man, who isn't even a poolee or in the DEP yet, on that he should be saying "Thanks Marines" to the Marines who gave him answers, not 'Thanks guys'. It's called 'respect' for the Marines who did give him answers. Geeeesh!
For Marines talking to Marines, you can say 'Thanks guys" all you want.

If I could do it again I would have gone for the FLM. It's a fast promoting MOS.

If he really wants to get into some high tech gear and possibly see action he should ask his recruiter about the Range Finder program. Lots of schooling there but he'll be a definite asset to the Corps.

Yea, FLM would be cool. I heard that you can ride shotgun on the Generals jet (UC-35D) when you travel since its certified for one pilot.

Hope I'm not chiming in too late, but as a Marine currently on Recruiting Duty, I spend alot of time talking with Applicants about their job interests, and I've seen some great choices as far as your interests go... I started out 17 years ago as a PRC-E1, and enjoyed the field so much that I moved on through alot of the advanced training, and now am a PRC-E7... It was some hard work and alot of studying, but you will definitely get alot of high speed, low drag training... As far as the Flight Line manager, that's alot of tedious work, in my opinion, but if you don't mind spending alot of time on your feet, then that could be the job for you... Post up after you talk to a Recruiter in your local area, and let us know what you decide on... Good Luck!!! S/F

Read the rules for posting. It's showing respect for people who have earned it. If you are respectful of everyone on this site (Marines, Pooles, and Marine Friends), you will get a lot of answers and information. Plenty of people have come onto the forum boards with attitudes, and get nowhere. A little respect goes a long way. You respect us, we show you the same and help you out or direct you to someone who can.:usmc:

Could anyone help me out on conversation starters for my parents?

I mean, I no why I want to do it. Its just very hard to get my parents to understand. They think its weird that there 16 year old son is wanting to join as soon as he turns 17.

I just need some advice on this all. The USMC is what I want. My parents what me to do what they think I am good at,, like software engineering or something. I can always do that when I am older. For now, I want to join the USMC.

Help me out.

Thanks Marines.

Lisa 23
09-09-09, 08:43 PM
Personally, I think what you want to say to your parents should come from your heart, not some words from Marines. I know you're looking for some help on this, but only you know what's truly in your heart to tell our parents.
Just sit them down and start talking......

Good Luck!

ClayPuglisi
09-09-09, 08:55 PM
I understand that fully. Its just the fact of bringing it up with them is hard.

Every time I bring it up, they do everything not to talk about it.

The only thing that they ever tell me is its not what I think it is. There right, I don't no exactly what it is. I mean, I do have a general idea, but that is not the point. Whether I hate it or not, I am still going to do it. Its what, for what I no, Marines do.

Lisa 23
09-09-09, 09:03 PM
Maybe the next time you try talking to them and they avoid not talking about it, in a nice way, try and make them sit down and listen to you. Let them know that it's your future, and although they want what's best for you, this is what YOU want to do and YOU want THEM to be a part of it.

I let my parents no that I am doing this one way or another and that they could either be part of it or not.

They took it harsh at first, but are now warming up to it... I think.

Today they said something that stumped me.

I told them I would join for 4 years and then go to college unless I decide to make a career out of the Marines. They then brought up the fact that I will be 21 by then and be "to old" for what I want. I am wanting to go to college for software engineering after the Marines. What is your take on College after the Marines?

I mean how successful are people in college after the Marines in a field involving advanced computer work?

Thanks Marines

Lisa 23
09-10-09, 11:27 PM
You're never to old to go to college no matter what age you are. It's your future and you decide what you want to do with it and how you want to go about doing it.
My nephew graduated from college in May of this year before he left for boot camp at age 25. He graduated boot camp on Aug 28th and is currently at Camp Lejeune for his MCT training. He turned 26 while he was in boot camp.
So, like I told you in a previous post, your parents only want what's best for you, but you're the one who needs to decide what you want and how you want to do it and when you want to do it.
Best of luck to you.

ClayPuglisi

I understand what you mean with that, but.. its hard to explain my point.. sorry. Um.. When you actually finish with the Marines and want to go to college what are your chances of getting accepted to a good one and having a great future from that. I mean many colleges like students straight from high school.

I think I see what you're asking here.

Your chances are the same as a person who just left HS. The grades you are getting now in HS will dictate where you can and can not study later on. There are some smaller private schools who can pick and choose who they let in. The majority of universities do not do that.

Lets say you would be 22 when you got out. That is not old. How successful you are once you get out will be on you. The sky is the limit and if you let what you learned as a Marine vault you upwards, then you have a great advantage over those who have not served.
