A man who saved his six-year-old neighbor from drowning received a special honor for his heroism.

KSDK -- A man who saved his six-year-old neighbor from drowning received a special honor for his heroism.

The Department of Illinois Marine Corps League awarded Terry Buhs with the Life Saving Heroism Medal. It is the highest award the the League can bestow upon a civilian.

Two months ago, Terry Buhs was fishing near his house when he heard a barking dog and a young girl's cries for help. Buhs drove to the girl's location, jumped in, and brought her to shore. She was face-down when he got to her. Buhs performed CPR and the girl started breathing again.

Authorities said that if Buhs hadn't acted, the girl would have died.
