Vietnam veterans to be honored in May 2010 events

Many Vietnam War veterans never got the welcome home that they deserved, says Don Weber, chairman and CEO of Logistics Health Inc. in La Crosse.
That’s why the Vietnam veteran and his wife, Roxanne, are among the major initial donors for the upcoming “Wisconsin Vietnam War Stories” documentary on Wisconsin Public Television and for events next May that will include a motorcycle ride from La Crosse to Green Bay and a celebration at Lambeau Field. Associated Bank and Wisconsin Public Service Corp. also are among the major donors.
A Saturday, May 22, 2010, evening event in Lambeau Field will honor Vietnam veterans and feature speakers, music, exhibits and the premiere of the three-part documentary series. The documentary will tell the story of the war through interviews of Wisconsin veterans.
Weber, who was wounded while serving in the Marines in Vietnam, said there are tentative plans for a concert in La Crosse the night before the May 21 motorcycle ride. The ride is separate from the third annual Veterans Memorial Ride, which will be held next June as part of Freedom Fest weekend in La Crosse.
“I believe it’s time to recognize (Vietnam veterans), thank them and show our appreciation,” Weber said of his involvement in the project.
Weber said Wisconsin Public Television approached him a couple years ago about the documentary program. Weber asked that La Crosse be included in the May events.
This October, the Wisconsin Veterans Museum and the Wisconsin County Veterans Service Officer Association will hold four veterans-only listening sessions throughout the state, where Vietnam veterans can share stories with each other and get a sneak preview of the documentary. One of the sessions will be at 6 p.m. Oct. 13, at Western Technical College’s Viroqua campus.
