IO HONDO - After 41 years, a Marine veteran from Rio Hondo finally received a service medal he earned while serving in Vietnam.

No one from the Marines seems to know why it took so long to recognize what Lance Corporal Seferino Rodriguez did to defend our country.

The Marine was severely wounded during battled. We’re told he fought back even when he came under fire from grenades and automatic weapons.

The U.S. Marines presented Rodriguez with the Bronze Star Medal with Combat V. It's called “V” for valor.

Rodriguez received the medal during a special ceremony at the Iwo Jima Monument in Harlingen.

“I didn't think it would come,” he tells us. “I never thought I would be here... thought I would die before I got it.”

The veteran says part of the medal belongs to his fallen comrades.

“I'm very proud of them...part of what I have here is for them...it is to honor them,” says Rodriguez.
