NC Marine sells leave to help homeless

Associated Press - August 24, 2009 7:35 AM ET

WILMINGTON, N.C. (AP) - A North Carolina Marine is offering himself to help charity.

The Star-News of Wilmington reported that Cpl. Matthew Purkey of Camp Lejeune is selling his 96 hours of leave over the Thanksgiving holiday for $25 an hour in hopes of raising $2,400 for the homeless.

The 27-year-old from Dayton, Ohio, plans to spend the hours he sells with homeless people in Wilmington.

Purkey's determination to help the homeless began last Christmas, when he joined a group of Marines who served homeless people at the Salvation Army Emergency Shelter in Wilmington.

Purkey lives near Hampstead and commutes to Camp Lejeune, where he works in the disbursing office. In addition to this charity work, he's also preparing for a deployment with the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit in January.
