WARREN, Mich. — The Defense Department has broken ground for a lab it says will seek to develop "safer, more efficient and more advanced ground vehicles" for the U.S. military.

The Ground System Power and Energy Laboratory is part of the U.S. Army's Tank and Automotive Research, Development and Engineering Center in Warren, north of Detroit.

Sens. Carl Levin and Debbie Stabenow, both D-Mich., were on hand for Monday's ceremony. Levin chairs the Senate Armed Services Committee and says the lab will help save the lives of U.S. military personnel.

The lab includes centers for developing hybrid-electric and fuel cell power systems.

The Pentagon says the lab will be "able to test vehicles in extreme temperatures, humidity and solar conditions."
