Ex-congressional candidate Cahir dies in Marines

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - A newspaper editor in Easton says his paper's former Washington correspondent is "an American hero."

Sgt. Bill Cahir (kayr) been killed in Afghanistan while serving with the Marines. The Bellefonte, Pa., native was 40.

Express-Times editor Joe Owens says Cahir had to talk his way into the Marine Corps Reserve because his was in his mid-30s. He says Cahir made it his mission to enlist and serve the nation.

After two tours of duty in Iraq, Cahir returned to Pennsylvania and tried to get the Democratic nomination for Congress in a north-central Pennsylvania district.

The Express-Times reports that after losing the primary, Cahir said, "My journalism career is over. I'll talk to the Marine Corps and see what they want me to do and talk to my wife and see what she wants me to do."

A family friend confirmed the death when answering the phone at a relative's home.
