Hello,

I am 25 years old (yes, I'll be a grandpa at boot camp). I have finally had the opportunity to join the Marines, as my business, family, housing and life in general circumstances have now allowed me to do so.

I'm wondering what will happen if for some reason I were to fail MOS school? My recruiter said that the Marine Corps will just pick an MOS for me without me having any choice in the matter?

My current MOS is 0231 Intelligence Specialist (Reserves)
ASVAB = 87
GT = 126

I have NO plans of failing, but want to be positive I understand the outcome if for some reason it happens... or if I ever get asked the question.

Yes, if you fail, you'll be assigned to a new MOS without any input as to what it might be. If the Marine Corps is going to invest the time and money to get you a security clearance and then you fail out of the school, well you're going to end up being miserable somewhere doing a job you don't want.

Thanks. Is there anyway that I can get access to the materials I'll need to learn while at Intel school before hand so that I can get a head start on studying?

Are there any websites out there that can help me get prepared for my specific MOS schooling?

What about a site that has statistics of people who fail certain MOS'?

Just out of curiosity, why are you so worried about failing out of school?

Don't worry about learing things before you get there. You'll have enough stuff to worry about just during bootcamp and MCT. Forget about Intel School until you make it there. Concern yourself with things like your leadership traits and principles, rank structure, general orders and things like that.

If you make it to Intel School, your instructors will make sure you are taught what you need to know when they decide.

I'm not worried about failing, I just like to have all of my angles and basis covered in detail. What happens if this, if that, etc.

I'm studying all of the general orders, rank structure, hymns, commands, etc. now.

Do you enjoy 0231?

Job Description: Intelligence specialists are familiar with all phases and facets of intelligence operations. Typical duties of intelligence specialists involve the collection, recording, analysis, processing, and dissemination of information/ intelligence. The intelligence specialist, depending on his/her rank, may supervise intelligence sections of commands up to and including MEF. Intelligence specialist who have a Defense Language Aptitude Battery (http://usmilitary.about.com/cs/joiningup/a/dlab.htm) of 100 may be eligible to attend language training at the Defense language Institute at Monterey, CA. This MOS will be assigned and voided only by the CMC (MM).

Job Requirements:
(1) Must possess a GT score (http://usmilitary.about.com/od/enlistedjo2/a/asvab.htm) of 100 or higher.
(2) Complete the MAGTF Intelligence Specialist: Entry Course, Navy Marine Corps Intelligence Training Center (NMITC), Dam Neck, VA.
(3) Selected Marine Corps Reservists without previous active duty intelligence experience who successfully complete Phases I and II of the MAGTF Intelligence Specialist Reserve Course, NMITC, Dam Neck, VA, will be awarded MOS 0231 as an additional MOS only. SMCR Marines holding additional MOS 0231 may receive primary MOS 0231 after serving 3 years in the billet MOS unless sooner waived by CMC (DirInt).
(4) Must be eligible for a top-secret security clearance (http://usmilitary.about.com/cs/generalinfo/a/security.htm) and access to Sensitive Compartmented Information based on a completed Single Scope Background Investigation (http://usmilitary.about.com/cs/generalinfo/a/security.htm) (SSBI). Applications for the SSBI must be submitted prior to attendance of the Intelligence Specialist Course at NMITC, Dam Neck, VA.
(5) Must have 24 months obligated service remaining upon graduation from the MOS producing school.
(6) Must be a U.S. citizen. (7) All Marines requesting a lateral move into the MOS 0231, USMC AND USMCR, must have a screening interview conducted by a 0231 GySgt or above. Interview waivers can be granted only by the OccFld 02 manager or CMC (MM)

Thank you, sir. I found this information a while back. I was hoping to get more details on it, but I am under a pretty good assumption that the exact material I'm looking for won't be available to me until I arrive at my MOS school.

I just like to be prepared. I scored a 55 on my practice ASVAB. Studied for 2 weeks and then scored an 87. It would be nice to get a head start on MOS school as well. Even if I didn't make it through boot camp (because that's what everyone on here says) It still wouldn't be a loss to have learned some of it.

0231Marine and a couple of others on this site will have the info you are looking for. Until you get to know the Marines on this site you might want to take a minute from time to time to check out some of the profiles of the Marines you are replying to. Helps you to know when you are replying to a Male or female also.:beer:

This is all you need to know about your MOS school for now, as was said above, you need to worry about all the input you are going to be getting in bootcamp, and trust me, it is going to be alot of input. Studying your MOS and getting that junk in your head will just clutter your 3 months of basic learning you will be getting on the Marine Corps. As far as worrying about failing, Instructors are skilled in teaching the MOS so you won't fail, and if by chance you do, then it's obviously not the MOS for you. Another thing,

Don't worry about failing MOS school when you HAVN'T even become a Marine yet, if your gonna worry about failing anything, worry about failing in bootcamp, cause your not even going to MOS school if you can't pass that!

Erico... I promise... I understand fully that boot camp must be completed before MOS school. I'm well aware of the fun challenges ahead. Thanks for the advice, though.

I am a planner. That is the reason for all of my questions (and because my wife wants to know everything). Some things I ask on her behalf.

I've done all the planning one can for boot camp (and will continue to until the day I leave), I'm just trying to get a mental head-start on the things to come once I complete recruit training. The word "If" doesn't really exist in my vocab when it comes to completing challenges. "If" for some reason I weren't to make it... it would be because of something out of my control (i.e. medical, etc.).

Hopefully everyone goes into boot with that mentality. Don't quit. Don't stop. Listen. Learn. Do.

I ****ing hate it, excuse my language but I was screwed by the recruiter, go figure that one! I was suppose to be an 0311 but got put into 5711. Thankfully at my first duty station I had to get my LAV license so I got to go get my second MOS, LAV Crewman. I am thinking of going back to active again and if i decide to I am going to switch to a different MOS.

Thats a good trait to have, I do the same thing. Can't run a business without knowing everything that could happen and all the options that could occur in the future without planning. Im willing to bet if you graduate boot camp you will graduate your MOS school with your type of mentality. Good Luck.
