'Fallujah' studio cuts staff after failing to find publisher

Atomic Games, the studio creating the Iraq-war based video game Six Days in Fallujah, is trimming staff after failing to secure a publisher for the title.

In a statement released today, the development house cites declining summer video game sales as well as the "edgy subject matter" of their military game.

"We wish to assure the dozens of Marine veterans who have collectively invested hundreds of hours in this project that, while we have been badly wounded, we will fight on. The stories of your brothers' courage and sacrifice in Fallujah must be shared with the world," reads a statement from Atomic.

The game will be developed by a smaller team funded by sister company Destineer. Atomic has not disclosed how many of the studio's 75 employees have been cut.

Six Days in Fallujah, built for PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, is based on a pivotal battle in the Iraqi city in November 2004. Marines who participated in the battle contributed to the game's development.

Konami initially signed on to publish Fallujah before pulling out of the project in April, reportedly because of negative reactions to the title.

Readers, do you want to see a game based on the Iraq war?
