PARRIS ISLAND, S.C. — A brigadier general at a South Carolina Marine base is set to hand over his duties to a new commander.

Brig. Gen. James Laster says goodbye to the Recruit Depot at Parris Island in a special ceremony on Tuesday. He turns over his job to Brig. Gen. Frederick Padilla.

More than 20,000 Marines graduate from the training site every year. It is the only depot that trains women to become Marines.

Laster is slated to take command of the 16,000 Marines with the 3rd Marine Division in Okinawa, Japan.

Padilla also takes over command for the Marine Corps Eastern Recruiting Region. That command is based at Parris Island and oversees all Marine recruiting east of the Mississippi River.
