Jones to visit Camp Lejeune
August 04, 2009 7:48 AM

Congressman Walter Jones will be visiting the Camp Lejeune Naval Hospital today to see what the Reach Out and Read pilot program is all about.

Camp Lejeune is among the more than 30 military bases that are sending young patients home with free books and advising parents to read to their children every day, according to a press release from the base. The Reach Out and Read Military Initiative was launched in 2008 to extend the early literacy program to military families.

Doctors participating in the program distribute new, age-appropriate books, including special books for military families being tested by separation and deployment.

Reach Out and Read serves more than 90,000 children of soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines at U.S. military installations all across the globe, according to the release. The program is a national, nonprofit organization that trains doctors and nurses to advise parents about the importance of reading aloud and gives books to children at pediatric checkups from 6 months to 5 years.
