They combined 0656 (Tactical Network Specialist) with 0651 (Data Network Specialist)not to long ago. I am currently in MOS school for it. As to how you find out if it's available I'm not sure. The course is 71 days long now I believe (about 3.5 months). Just a little info of what I do know, hope it helps you out Cpl. If you have any questions I'll see what I can do for you. Semper Fi.

I wish MOS changes were immediately advertised. Nonetheless Im still devoted. I appreciate the info, Rosa.

If you're currently training, then it seems to confirm availability. Do you know where you'll be stationed after finishing? You're active duty, correct?

Yes, I'm active duty. I won't find out where I'm stationed for another week or two. I've been talking to people that are about to graduate though and they are going pretty much where ever they picked. I've heard everything from Oki to Lejeune to Cherry Point. There are also alot of Marines still waiting to pick up class so it should be available to do a lat move, I have two NCOs in my class.

Try going to your command 6 shop and talk to the Comm Chief.. best place to start if you are interested in getting into the comm field.

I never figured consulting the Comm Chief. Good idea.

0656 is gone, everyone is now (or about to be) 0651. LAT moving means losing your duty station preference for the most part, don't know if you have any special deals worked out. Orders are like everything else in the Marine Corps, sometimes things work out in your favor (picking location based on class ranking), most of the time they don't. Always plan worst case scenario, that is what I always do.

Do you have any IT background? You don't need it, but wondering why you would want to go Data Dink.

As far as unit goes, almost all Comm goes to every kind of unit, including 51/56. From v11 to HQMC and everything in between. NMCI is almost gone so that will be a huge PITA you won't have to worry about when in garrison. If you tell me that you are good at one specific part, or are looking to do something specific maybe I can help you more.

I've an IT background but Im more relieved it's not demanding.

Im interested in computer/radio architecture & troubleshooting. Setting routers, ethical hacking, and network production/security.

There is always room in 0651/56 MOS. Alot of people get out after the initial 5, because you can make alot of money as a civilian with the same job. Talk to the CRS about LAT moving maybe ? Not real sure man. Good luck though.

I didn't say it wasn't demanding, just not requiered.

Then you want a victor unit. EPLARS and switches and routers are used mostly there.

... ethical hacking, and network production/security.

With enough luck you might be able to think about some of that in most units, but if that is your main choice, then look into 0689, it is what IA is all about. Requiers Sgt and a TS, and will place you in higher level commands.

I didn't realize they merged 0656 and 0651. In any case, in the fleet the jobs are virtually identical, at least in my experience. All in all its a pretty good field, although there isn't much to do in CONUS because NMCI took over a lot of the tasks (they are going away in 2010 though, I think). Nonetheless, when you deploy you stay pretty busy, and get to do something good ****.

If you're interested in IT, this is obviously they way to go. The initial school is a joke, but once you're in the fleet, there is A LOT of extra schooling available, some of it is very good. I've been to everything from WiFi Hacking, to Disaster Recovery, to routing & switching, and Active Directory training. Like I said before, you don't really get to use it until you deploy. When you get out, there are a lot of job opportunities if you have tactical experience as well.
