Marines broke ground on a new headquarters building Wednesday at Cherry Point less than two years after a fire destroyed the old one.

Maj. Gen. James F. Flock, commander of the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing based at Cherry Point, said that the building went from planning, to design, to appropriations, to bid in less than two years was amazing.

“The whole process usually takes five, six or seven years,” he said.

The two-story, 84,000 square-foot building will house the commands of Cherry Point and the 2nd MAW. It will be about 25,000 square feet larger than the old headquarters building, which was constructed in the 1940s.

About 460 people will work inside the new building, which will be constructed on the site of the old building off C Street. The $18.7 million structure, to be built by PCL Construction Services of Charlotte, is expected to be completed in the spring of 2011.

Skip Conklin, director of facilities at Cherry Point, said the building will be larger and friendlier to the environment than the old building with a more efficient air-conditioning system as well as stormwater runoff plans will help in getting the building certified through the U.S. Green Building Council.

The old building was destroyed by a fire on Sept. 8, 2007. Officials determined the cause of the fire to be electrical in nature.
