MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. —

All first-term reenlistment boatspaces for the 2009 fiscal year have been filled, preventing initial contract extensions throughout the Corps, According to Total Force Retention System Message A0138.

Boatspaces were closed after the Corps achieved its 2009 fiscal year end-strength goal of 202,000 active-duty Marines. First-term reenlistments are expected to reopen Oct. 1.

“Effective immediately, the fiscal year 2009 First Term Alignment Plan is now closed,” said Staff Sgt. Eric Santiago, career retention specialist, Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton. “All requests currently pending for the 2009 fiscal year FTAP will be returned with no action taken.”

In addition to retention efforts, the economic recession and dismal civilian job prospects, the satisfaction of servicemembers remains a major contributor.

Nearly three out of four enlisted Marines say they are satisfied with their lives in the Corps, according to Manpower and Reserve Affairs, Headquarters Marine Corps’ recent annual survey of 4,700 Marines.

During the past four years, there has been a significant increase of first-term Marines hoping to re-enlist, according to MRA, HQMC. In 2006, one out of every five first-term Marines surveyed planned to re-enlist.

“The leadership, expertise, and professionalism displayed by our retention officials were instrumental in the execution of a historical retention year,” added Santiago.

First term Marines exiting the Corps between Oct. 1, 2009 and Sept. 30, 2010 may continue to submit reenlistment requests, Santiago said.
