Marine Air Station gets new sergeant major

The Associated Press

Enlisted Marines at a South Carolina base are welcoming a new senior enlisted advisor as they bid farewell to the installation's 27th sergeant major.

Officials at the Marine Corps Air Station in Beaufort say Sgt. Maj. David Carter relinquishes his post Friday and retires after serving more than 30 years with the Marine Corps.

Sgt. Maj. David Zapp will assume the job as the Air Station's sergeant major. Zapp most recently served as sergeant major for the 12th Marine Regiment.

The sergeant major is the senior enlisted advisor to the station's commanding officer on issues involving the morale, welfare and well-being of the post's enlisted men and women.

Some 4,000 active duty Marines are assigned to the Marine Corps Air Station in Beaufort.
