Tests help Marines warp speed to Bachelors

7/21/2009 By Pfc. Jahn R. Kuiper , Marine Corps Base Quantico

MARINE CORPS BASE QUANTICO, Va. —The Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support commemorates 35 years of helping service members achieve their higher education goals July 29.

DANTES is an expansion of Department of Defense benefits provided to employees, including college entrance and credit examinations, college credit for military training and experience, counselor support, distance learning, teacher certification, reference materials and the credit-by-exam program.

In 2008 $48 million was saved in federal tuition assistance via DANTES credit-by-exam program, which allows service members to earn college credit through the College Level Examination Program and DATNES Subject Standardized Tests, said Dr. Jeffrey Cropsey, the director of DANTES. As a result, American taxpayers saved $170 million through all DANTES-managed programs last year.

DANTES allows service members to pursue academic degrees, earn technical certification and/or license or plan for the next stage of their career after the military.

"Our program makes it so much easier because [the Marine] can just come here and take any test they need," said Susan McIntosh, the Education Services Officer at Quantico. "For every exam they pass they receive credit, so they are getting their degree faster."

"Since 1994 more than 11,000 veterans have become public school teachers

through the DANTES-managed Troops-to-Teachers program," said Crospey. "These teachers have proven to be very effective in classrooms across the country – in leadership and student performance."

Distance Learning Catalogs is another tool provided by DANTES. The catalog contains 234 institutions, 3,893 degree programs and 17,240 courses. The catalog gives service members important information on distance learning programs they can use no matter where they are stationed.

In garrison or abroad, there is no reason Marines can’t work on their education.

"We train all the Marine Security Guard CO’s and XO’s so they can provide tests in the remote places," said McIntosh. "It doesn’t matter if you’re in an embassy half way around the world."
