July 26, 2003 -- President Bush has tapped a woman to lead the Air Force - a nomination that comes on the heels of the service academy's handling of sexual-abuse cases involving female cadets this year.
If confirmed by the Senate, Harvard instructor Barbara Barrett would become only the second woman to hold the Air Force's top post.

Barrett served as a member of the Defense Advisory Committee on Women in the Services in the first Bush administration.

The president's effort to reach out to a woman is seen as an effort for the Air Force to move beyond the sex-abuse scandal. Four top-ranking officers - including a three-star general who was stripped of a star - were replaced at the Air Force Academy after it was disclosed that dozens of current and former female cadets had been raped and then ignored when they complained to their superiors.

Barrett, an Arizonan, would replace James Roche, who was named in May by President Bush to become Army secretary.

The first female Air Force secretary was in the Clinton administration. Sheila Widnall held that post from 1993 to 1997. With Post Wire Services.
