I know there are alot of "guaranteed MOS" and whatnot threads out there. For alot of people it is a concern, including myself.
Of course what everyone is stereotyped as wanting to be a 03xx. However I noticed MOST poolees are not 03xx.
I have read that you can and can't get a guranteed MOS. I have been told not to take anything but what you ask for and you can guarantee at least the type of MOS in your contract.
I've been told the opposite of this also. So which is it? And if its the latter then can you stay in the DEP or wait to a certain point in the year in order to get the MOS you want?Btw, yes, I am deadset on being a grunt.

Also, I have read you CAN wait, are you told when slots are opened up in your desired MOS by the recruiter?
I also saw that the final contract and swearing in at/after MEPs shows what MOS you will go into.

I've heard too many stories of new Marines that wanted to be a grunt but ended up being a cook (myself included). But as the saying goes, every Marine a rifleman!

This may be a ass-backwards way of going about this, but I was in the reserves for 8 years and I was an 0311, not by choice. My hometown, Des Moines, IA, where I enlisted, had an infantry reserve unit. So by default, if I wanted to stay and drill in my hometown, I was going to be an infantryman. Needless to say, I only spent a month there and moved to Atlanta, GA where I joined up with an H/S Company and became a cook/NBC specialist/whatever they need you as.

What you can do is sign the contract as a reservist to drill at an Infantry Unit, secure your MOS as an 03xx. Do a few months of drill as a reservist, then go to your Career Planner and tell him/her that you want to go active duty (if that is your goal). The Marine Corps will send you to Infantry School along with all the other new Marines as well. After graduation, as they get shipped off to their duty station, you get shipped back home to start your Reserve Training.

Check in your hometown, there are reserve units in larger cities. If you're hardcore, you can even join a Recon reserve unit.

I want to be 03xx active duty preferable 0311 or 0351. I have read MOS isn't guranteed but someone going active duty can Secure a Field.
The whole reserve to active for guranteed job sounds kind of sketchy to me.
Are there any 03 Marines around who can tell me how the process went for them?

you get to sign for an enlistment code... the MOSs in that enlistment code are the ones that you MIGHT get, so be sure you are ok with ANY of those MOSs.

mine was CD which at the time was MT Maint and Heavy Equip Maint... I got MT.

So what if you aren't ok with some of them? Can you just wait until more slots for the field you want to open?

um, sure you can wait... but if a year goes by and you haven't shipped then you get dropped from the DEP and you need to go through the who process again.... even if you have a ship date the week after you get dropped you need to go through it all again.

it's your choice though.

There's really no point in waiting. I doubt the recruiter is going to know exactly which jobs are going to be open by the time you graduate bootcamp. You get your contract with a list of jobs that you will do. Once you're near then end of your time at boot camp, the DIs will tell you what your job is going to be. The needs of the Marine Corps will always out-weigh the wants of Marines. From my experience, a lot of people got jobs they didn't expect, or didn't want and actually have a lot of fun now.
