Marine Corps Sgt. Joshua J. Bouchard, a former Amherst man who was very seriously wounded in Afghanistan last week, has undergone surgery in Germany and is expected to be flown to Bethesda Naval Hospital in Maryland on Friday, a representative of a Marines veterans organization said Tuesday.

The 26-year-old graduate of Amherst Regional High School, who lost his left leg when an improvised explosive device exploded, had several operations including back surgery on Monday at Landstul Medical Center in Germany, Frank Real, public affairs officer with the Marine Corps League said Tuesday.

His father James J. Bouchard and stepmother Suzann C. Bouchard of Granby, and his mother Maryann Hafford of Harwinton, Conn., have been at his side since Sunday, according to Real.

Bouchard is in the 2nd Reconnaissance Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force based at Camp Lejeune, N.C.
