NC Marines to start pre-deployment training

CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. — North Carolina-based Marines will mark the start of their six-month deployment training with a ceremony at their base.

The 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) headquarters will grow from 100 Marines and sailors to an air-ground task force of 2,200 during a ceremony at Camp Lejeune Wednesday. The unit will begin training for on a range of missions from humanitarian assistance to full-scale combat.

The ceremony marks the first time the 24th MEU will have MV-22 Ospreys and the first time the 1st Battalion, 9th Marine Regiment deployed with a MEU since their reactivation in 2007.

The 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit will stand up Wednesday and launch a six-month pre-deployment training cycle in order to prepare for a deployment of firsts, according to MEU officials.

The MEU will include the MV-22 Ospreys, Expeditionary Fire Support System and Internally Transportable Vehicle for the first time, according to a press release from the 24th MEU. This will also be the first time Battalion Landing Team 1st Battalion, 9th Marine Regiment has deployed with a MEU since their reactivation in 2007.

The MEU will consist of Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 162, 1/9, and Combat Logistics Battalion 24. Once the MEU is formed, the unit will grow from its current 100 Marines and sailors to an air-ground task force of 2,200, according to the release.

The MEU will conduct training in and around Camp Lejeune, in Virginia, West Virginia, Indiana and at sea.
