CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. — The military says a Marine from North Fort Myers was killed in Afghanistan.

The Department of Defense says 25-year-old Sgt. Michael C. Roy, who was stationed out of North Carolina, died Wednesday while supporting combat operations in Nimroz province, Afghanistan.

Roy had planned on coming back to Southwest Florida next week to see his new-born son, NBC-2 reports.

Roy was assigned to the 3rd Marine Special Operations Battalion, Marine Special Operations Advisor Group, Marine Corps Forces Special Operations Command at Camp Lejeune.

According to a press release from the U.S. Marine Corps Forces Special Operations Command, Roy joined the Marine Corps on Sept. 25, 2001, and was trained as an rifleman. He was promoted to sergeant on Oct. 10, 2005, joining MARSOC on March 15, 2008.

His decorations include a Navy Achievement Medal, a Combat Action Ribbon, a Navy Unit Commendation, three Navy Meritorious Unit Commendations, two Good Conduct Medals, the National Defense Service Medal, the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, a Humanitarian Service Medal, four Sea Service Deployment Ribbons, and a NATO Medal-ISAF Afghanistan.
