CAMP PENDLETON: Fire on base at 1,000 acres; containment delayed

By the North County Times

CAMP PENDLETON ---- A brush fire that started on Camp Pendleton on Saturday had grown to about 1,000 acres by Sunday evening and was about 50 percent surrounded, a fire dispatcher said.

The dispatcher, with the U.S. Forest Service, which is assisting on the fire, said that no structures or people were threatened. He said that firefighters did not expect to fully surround the fire for two more days because it is burning in an area that firefighters can't enter.

Part of the fire is burning in an "impact area" where there may be unspent munitions, base officials said. Firefighters do not go into those areas because of the risk of explosions, and that makes it hard to estimate when the fire might be contained.

The fire started Saturday afternoon in the Case Springs training area, a northeast part of the base near the Cleveland National Forest, base officials said.
