Nice catch! Pendleton provides multiple fishing hotspots

7/10/2009 By Pfc. Daniel Boothe , Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton
MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. — With a total of six fresh and saltwater pond locations on Camp Pendleton, the average fisherman can expect a prize-winning catch almost every time.

“Pendleton anglers can reel in anything from a largemouth bass to a leopard shark,” said Mike Rouse, head fisheries biologist, Wildlife Management Branch, Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton. “Not too many people really think that there is great fishing in Southern California, but the truth is that there really is.”

Three consistently open fishing areas include the Del Mar Boat Basin, San Onofre Beach and Lake O’Neill.

“Fishing on base is close, quiet and great for families,” said Jason E. Smart, recreation supervisor, Lake O’Neill, Marine Corps Community Services and former Pendleton Marine. “My son and daughter both caught their first fish here.”

Only those affiliated or sponsored by someone in the military can fish Pendleton’s annually-populated waters, said Mike J. Tucker, wildlife technician, Game Warden’s Office, Camp Pendleton.

“I live in Oceanside and fish at every freshwater lake in a 50-mile radius,” said Ernest F. Porter, 52-year base fisherman and retired gunnery sergeant. “But you can’t beat the unlimited fishing on the base when you have to pay for every visit out in town.”

Fishing on base requires a base permit and state fishing license which can be found at the All-Seasons Store on Mainside and at most off-base sporting goods stores. Service members are also required to obtain a base permit from the Game Warden’s Office.

Service members stationed on Camp Pendleton must pay an annual $41.20 resident licensing rate and purchase a $5 base permit. Those under the age of 16 are not required to have a state fishing license.

“Each time you go fishing you learn something new,” said Porter, who holds the record for the largest catfish caught on base. “You've got to have good gear, patience and a lot of luck.”
