So today I got a call from a special investigator from the government, and she said she was going to conduct a background check on me, and i had to set up an appt. I was wondering, why I'm getting a background check? Is it for a special clearance or something? Any help would be great. By the way my MOS is 03xx
Thank you

DO NOT give out any personal info of any kind to this person. As far as I know, when the government does a background check, they DON'T call you and tell you what they are doing, they just do it.

You haven't been checking out goat porn or anything, have you??

It might be one of those census reports. I think those are supposed to be mandatory, though I'm not sure what all they ask you. Just be careful what you tell them, and don't give out personal info like LASWMarine said

The census surveys are the ones the government or state or whoever conduct to learn about the different demographics living in an area, or what the median household income is in that area, etc.

Yeah I called my recruiter, and at 1st he thought it would be a security clearance, but then when i told him it was a special investigator and stuff he said he had no idea, which got me a bit worried. and hopefully it is a census.
I know its nothing with drugs because im straight edge, nothing with medical because im good to go. Only thing i could think of is that i wasnt born here.

You're probably on the government's suspected terrorist list. The special investigator will probably just water board you for a couple days and then say you're good to go.

On a serious note, I had something similar happen to me in A-school. I got a call, set up an appointment and the investigator talked to me for about 30 minutes and I never saw him again. This was however for my security clearance, so maybe they got you mixed up with 02XX or something.

You completed an SF86 with your background information going back 7 years or to your 18th birthday for your NACLC. She will have that completed questionnaire with her when she does the interview, so she already has all of your personal information. The interviews are sometimes necessary when there are questions regarding past criminal conduct or financial concerns, credit, bankruptcy, etc.

Thank you Master Gunnery Sgt. I doubt its criminical or financial, but I guess we'll just have to wait and see what happens, hopefully its nothing big

The whole thing sounds fishy to me. Full single-scope background investigations are not done for entry-level grunts. Those are so involved and expensive, they are only conducted for people who really need them done (Top Secret clearances, etc). Also, you would know if a SSBI was being done on you because of the amount of paperwork you would have had to do.

Do not call them. If this person calls back, give her your recruiter's phone number and tell her to set up a face-to-face meeting at the recruiter's office. Do not let them bully you into a phone interview.

I'll bet that would the last you hear of it.

DO NOT give out any personal info over the phone to someone you don't know. Real BI investigators would not do a phone interview without some sort of prior contact to prove who they were.

The investigator will have your SF-86 with them... They're verifying or revisiting some stuff with you... The Dept of Defense is now doing 100% interviews ... The investigator is legit...
