Legion of Merit awarded

7/9/2009 By Sgt. Judith Carver , Marine Corps Base Quantico
MARINE CORPS BASE QUANTICO, Va. —

Awarded by the Commandant of the Marine Corps, the Legion of Merit is presented to service members of the armed forces who have performed extremely commendable service.

“This is a really great moment,” said Lt. Gen. George J. Flynn, commanding general of Marine Corps Combat Development Command, during the award ceremony for Col. Fred M. Padilla, the chief of staff at the MCCDC. “We are truly going to miss you. You’ve been a phenomenal chief of staff.”

During his year-long tour between June 2008 and June 2009, “Colonel Padilla’s dogged work ethic, persuasive leadership style and complete grasp of the diverse requirements of the Marine Corps’ most complex commands enhanced the Corps’ ability to continue to make Marines and win our Nation’s battle,” as stated in the award citation presented on July 1 at the General Raymond G. Davis Center.

This is the third Legion of Merit Padilla has received, and he will soon be the Commanding General at Parris Island, S.C.

“Like most awards, I regard it as a product of what everyone [at MCCDC] has done,” said Padilla. “There are 80 separate commands and sites that make sure Marines are able to go into harm’s way prepared.”

Padilla ended with a smile saying, “I’m proud to wear it.”
