Fewer Marines will be eligible for re-enlistment bonus in 2010

YOKOSUKA NAVAL BASE, Japan — Marines expecting to receive re-enlistment bonuses in 2010 may be in for a surprise, according to a Marine Corps message.
Hundreds of jobs in the Marine Corps have been cut from the fiscal year 2010 selective re-enlistment bonus list, due to better-than-expected retention, according to the message sent to Marines last week.
The Corps recently reached its end strength goals of 202,000 personnel two years early — a milestone that could mean more stringent requirements for those trying to stay in the Marines, according to the Corps Web site.
In a Marine message earlier this year focusing on enlisted retention guidelines, officials said the Corps’ "emphasis on retention as a function of command and the demonstrated willingness of proven performers to stay Marine has yielded an unprecedented level of retention achievement since FY07."
Marines most affected by the change are those with 10 to 14 years of service. Last year, more than 150 specialties in that category qualified for bonuses. In 2010, only 32 will remain eligible.
Marines with 14 to 18 years of service will see a complete cut of bonus opportunities next year.
Similarly, a program offering bonuses to Marines who’ve left the Corps and then returned has been suspended for 2010.
Seeing comparable successes with retention, the Navy recently suspended its selective re-enlistment bonus program for the remainder of the fiscal year.
