VISTA – A Marine who pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the killing of his 6-month-old daughter was sentenced today to 15 years to life in prison.

Lance Cpl. Santos Lombera Jr., 23, was accused of fatally beating his daughter, Alysea, on March 28 last year. She was pronounced dead that night at Tri-City Medical Center.

The defendant did not speak during the hearing at the Vista Courthouse.

After the hearing outside court, Santos Lombera Sr., the defendant's father said in Spanish: "He (the son) is not the guilty one."

Also outside after the hearing, Jose Lombera, the defendant's brother, said he used to send his own children out with their uncle all the time without fear for their safety.

The defendant changed his plea last month after a jury was chosen for his trial, deciding he didn't want the victim's mother, Diana Sermons, to see autopsy photographs of the child, Deputy Public Defender Sloan Ostbye said.

Sempers,
