A Camp Lejeune Marine was buried Sunday at the New Prospect Baptist Church in Statesville after being killed during a training accident at Camp Lejeune.

Lance Cpl. Johnathan Dale Mitchell Sharpe, 19, of Statesville, died in a single High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV) accident during a pre-deployment training exercise June 16, 2nd Marine Division spokesman Maj. Cliff Gilmore said Monday.

Sharpe was a machine-gunner with Weapons Company, 2nd Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment and was preparing for his first deployment, Gilmore said.

Sharpe's grandmother, Saralena Sharpe, who adopted him at 19-months-old, told the Statesville Record and Landmark that she has been remembering the man who loved fishing, church and Scouting.

"There has been a great joy of remembrance," she told the newspaper. "With God as our substantial almighty being we have made it through."

Sharpe, who was promoted to lance corporal April 1, was born in Iredell and joined the Marine Corps in Nov. 2007.

The accident is under investigation.
