Marines from around nation expected to attend Coughlin funeral

By Globe Staff | June 21, 2009

Marines from around the country are expected to gather Tuesday in Milton for the funeral of Lance Corporal Patrick J. Coughlin, 21, who died Friday after falling in a Quincy quarry.

“I expect a very large presence,’’ said First Sergeant Troy Schielein of the Marine Corps, adding that the burial will be with full military honors and a 21-gun salute.

Coughlin had recently returned from Iraq, where he served with the First Battalion, 25th Regiment, the reserve unit known as “New England’s Own.’’

Coughlin was with three friends when he planned to dive into the quarry, but apparently slipped and fell to the rocks below him.

Visiting hours will be held tomorrow from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Alfred D. Thomas Funeral Home in Milton. A funeral Mass will be said at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in St. Agatha Church.
