Can anyone tell me more information about the Active Reserve? I've found very little info on the 'net. All i know is that you are active with a unit and get Active Duty benefits. But you serve a billet and its only for a year? So if i do that then what do i do after that year? Come back home and have to look for another job? I dont think im understanding all of it.
Thanks!

PS i tried to search for more info on here but search returned nothing.

Are you currently in the reserves? Looking at your profile, it says you got out in 2005. You will need to contact a prior service recruiter and signback up into the reserves first if I'm not mistaken. AR can go for more than one yr also. Depending on what you are looking to do, you might also look into ADSW orders. Could probably get AR or ADSW orders to LANT there in Norfolk if you want to stay in that area.

Thanks for the reply GySgt, yes I am currently out of contract. My goal is to be on active duty again, but my PSR said that the Corps is doing good in recuiting so they are not taking prior sep. packages and that my only option is to sign in the Reserves and go Active Reserve and then after 3 years I can re-enlist back to Active Duty, but I am having trouble getting information about it.

Not sure if they post info concerning the AR on their website but you might check out MarForRes website. Your PSR should have all that info for you. If he/she isn't telling you anything more about the AR program...... find another PSR.

the AR is active duty... but you work at a reserve station... you are permanant personnel there (I&I) and you move from billet to billet in the AR... promotion is slow since there is only 3000 - 8000 (I honestly don't know) Marines in the AR... you get active duty benes and privilages... after one enlistment you might be able to go active duty if you can get a boat space back on AD.

a PSR IS the guy you want to talk to about signing the contract.

what's your rank? they don't like anything higher than a Sgt joining as you screw over the kiddies who would have been promoted into that billet and will more than likely force them out of the Corps due to service limitations.

Fastest way to get an AR billet is probably to go to the nearest reserve unit and join that unit. Make a few drills then talk to the career planner. You should be able to get a listing of open AR billets from him/her, submit your package to HQMC with the required recommendations and you'll be good to go. AR billets are usually for 3 years, not 1, unless things have changed since 2003.

no top... they're still 3... 'course if they don't have someone to replace you, you can always stay longer...

I jsut recently joined the AR program back on Feb. 20th 2009 so I should be able to answer any questions you have. Seems like everyone's post have pretty much said it all. And you'll be on station for a minumum of 3yrs and not 1. I don't have any other helpful information but if you have anymore questions please message me.

Thanks for all your replies. They really helped. I got out as a CPL. 3 years for the billets is great! Makes more sense to me now!

You can get AR slots that are less than 3 years they are called Limited Tour Billets. If you go to the Man Power and Reserve website you can find a excel spreadsheet of all the billets available.

What happens after the 3 years is up? Do you get pulled out of AR and put back into IRR, do you get moved to active or do you have the option to stay in the AR position?

I am getting ready to submit a package at my local reserve unit and am interested in the AR. I am well aware that I either have to be active, IRR, etc.. Just curious what happens to you after your 3 years is up?

Thanks.

There are many MOS's that are eligible for the Active Reserve. Enlistments in most of the MOS’s are 4 years with a requirement of 2 year tours at a particular duty station before requesting a transfer for the remaining 2 years. This is the current list of MOS's needed by the AR:

The following Career MOSs are supported:
0121, 0151, 0193, 0231, 0311, 0331, 0369, 0411, 0431, 0451, 0481, 0491, 0621, 0629, 0691, 0651, 0656, 0699, 0699, 1141, 1142, 1161, 1169, 1171, 1181, 2111, 3043, 3051, 3451, 3521, 3522, 3529, 3531, 3537, 5711, 6046, 6019, 6048, 6072, 6073, 6112, 6113, 6114, 6152, 6153, 6154, 6172, 6173, 6216, 6217, 6256, 6257, 6242, 6322, 6391, 6316, 6317, 6324, 6336, 6337, 6591, 6531, 6541, 6672, 7041, 8412, 8421

and Limited Tour MOS supported are:
1371, 1391, 1812, 1833, 2146, 3381, 5811, 7011, 7372, 7382

The process to apply for Active Reserve begins at your reserve unit and you again will work with the prior service recruiter attached to that reserve unit and essentially is the same package and procedure as described above but usually takes half the time or less. Here is a link to more info on the Active Reserve, scroll down to see the answers as a new window does not pop up!

The last two options are a) request to be listed as available to augment to an active duty unit that needs a billet to be filled on a temporary basis. The units that need people will contact your command requesting assistance, essentially its a they find you situation. At the end of that particular assignment you will be returned to your Reserve Unit.

And b) the Global Reserve Billet Opportunities which is a list of specific MOS's at a specified rank. Here is the link, it is updated regularly as needed. http://www.marforres.usmc.mil/HQ/G1/Operations/Sourcing/GlobalBillets.asp (http://www.marforres.usmc.mil/HQ/G1/Operations/Sourcing/GlobalBillets.asp)

at this time I can't even get into a reserve unit in my area. I went through all the paperwork, physical, etc.. and was told there aren't any units in need of an 0311. So the AR is not even an option at this point.

Sucks when you are ready to go and get put on stand by.
