USMC's 1st Div. vets to dedicate plaque to fallen comrades

Associated Press - June 19, 2009 3:15 AM ET

SARATOGA SPRINGS , N.Y. (AP) - Veterans of the First Marine Division will be at the New York State Military History Museum later this morning to dedicate a plaque honoring their fallen comrades.

Retired Marine Lt. Gen. Stephen Olmstead, an Albany native, will join members of the First Marine Division Association and Marines from an Albany-based Reserve unit at the museum in Saratoga Springs to honor leathernecks from the First Division who gave their lives in defense of America.

The division -- known as "The Old Breed" -- fought throughout the Pacific Theater during World War II, and again in Korea, Vietnam and both Gulf wars.

The plaque being dedicated to the First Division's fallen will hang on the museum's Wall of Honor.

The First Marine Division Association has 50 chapters across the country with about 12,000 members.
