School of Infantry West holds "Jane Wayne Day"

6/17/2009 By Cpl. Alvaro Aro , Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton

MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. — More than 120 spouses and family members participated in the School of Infantry’s Jane Wayne Day, June 13.

“The purpose of this day is for the wives to learn more about what their spouses do, and to have fun,” said Evie Plumb, family readiness officer, SOI-W, Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton.

The annual event began with a brief to the military wives and family members by Col. Brennan T. Byrne, commanding officer, SOI-W, in which he gave details on how the activities were to be conducted. He also emphasized the main goal of the event: to have fun and be safe.

“We want the families to have a good appreciation of what their Marines are doing every day and for the families to have a relaxing Saturday to bond,” said Plumb.

The SOI-W Jane Wayne Day consisted of multiple events including the combat fitness test with face painting, obstacle course and martial arts demonstration, and Indoor Simulated Marksmanship Trainer and conducting life-fire with the M16A2 service rifle. Family members completed all three stations and received a small taste of what their loved ones do on a daily basis.

In addition to the stations, the event also offered activities for children at the SOI-W football field, including a bounce house, dunk tank, K-9 demonstrations, remote control race tracks, static military displays, a fire truck and a massage area intended for the ladies after their rotation.

Following the rotations, lunch was served on the football field where families relaxed and enjoyed a wonderful Saturday afternoon. Participants received Jane Wayne Day t-shirts during the event.

The SOI Family Readiness Program is always planning new fun events for the families. They are currently working on a baby shower for their expecting mothers.
