I've been following SSgt. Petzold and SSgt. McCord and their re-enlistment stories, but I was wondering...Are there any concrete rules about rank retention for NON-SNCO's?

Example: I got out as a Cpl. in 2003. If I re-upped in October, what might my rank be?

How about non-NCO's (e.g. E3 and below)?
What about length of break in service?
What about primary MOS vs. lat moves?

By prior service I mean USMC prior service.

Rank retention really depends on Headquarters Marine Corps. For example, I got out as a Corporal in 05 and a year later I picked up Sergeant in the IRR but I was allowed to retain my rank. Another...

Depends if you are going into the active reserves or straight active. Either way, your answer is in an order or bulletin.
So go to Marines.mil and use the search feature .
