OCEANSIDE: Brush fire burns on Camp Pendleton

By the North County Times

CAMP PENDLETON ---- A brush fire that had scorched about 102 acres was 50 percent surrounded Tuesday evening in a south-central area of Camp Pendleton, base officials said.

Firefighters expect to surround the fire completely by midday Wednesday, Marine Corps officials said.

Evacuation orders of buildings in the base's areas 12 and 13, wildland areas adjacent to the burn area, were cancelled Tuesday evening.

The fire started about 1:20 p.m. in a paintball park across from the Ranch House museum on Vandegrift Boulevard, about 2.5 miles past the base's "back gate" in Oceanside officials said. No structures had burned, and no injuries had been reported Tuesday evening.

Roads that were closed because of the blaze were scheduled to reopen late Tuesday, officials said.

Vandegrift Boulevard was closed in both directions from Basilone Road to Rattlesnake Canyon, and Rattlesnake Canyon was closed from Vandegrift Boulevard to Hobby Shop Road.

Firefighting helicopters and airplanes, strike teams of North County firefighters and Camp Pendleton firefighters all battled the blaze Tuesday.

Fire officials said the cause of the fire was unknown, but that no Marines were training in the area where the fire started.

Smoke from the fire was visible from neighboring communities, with emergency dispatchers reporting numerous calls from concerned residents.
