Corps: Death of Camp Foster Marine an apparent suicide

CAMP FOSTER, Okinawa — The death of a 27-year-old Marine on Okinawa last Thursday was an apparent suicide, according to a news release Monday.
Cpl. Adam J. Grady of Hallstead, Pa., was found dead in his barracks room on Camp Foster, the Marines said. Because the death is under investigation, no further details of the incident were released.
Grady was assigned to Bravo Company, Headquarters and Service Battalion, Marine Corps Base as a telephone systems and personal computer repairer. He began active duty in the Marine Corps on March 14, 2006, and was assigned to Okinawa in January 2008.
He was promoted to corporal in March 2008.
His apparent suicide is part of a disturbing trend, according to the Department of Defense. The suicide rate in the Marine Corps has been steadily rising in recent years, with more active-duty Marines killing themselves in 2008 than in any other year since the invasion of Iraq in 2003.
According to Department of Defense statistics, 41 Marines killed themselves in 2008, compared to 32 suicides in 2007. In the first four months of this year, the Marines reported 12 suicides.
The Marines also reported that there were 150 attempted suicides last year.
Still, the suicide rate for Marines remains below the comparable rate for American civilians.
In 2008, the Marine rate was 16.8 per 100,000 personnel, while the civilian rate was at 19.5 per 100,000. And the rate in the Army last year was also higher, 18.1 per 100,000, according to the Defense Department.
Grady was a recipient of the National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal.
"The Marine Corps is saddened by this loss, and our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Cpl. Grady during this difficult time," Marine public affairs officer 2nd Lt. Scott A. Sasser said in a news release.
