How many of you were ever on the USS Portland LSD-37. I was on it for a brief Period in 2002, for a MAGTF off the coast of Florida. Pretty cool ordeal, it was for the McDonalds Air Sea Show. Was pretty cool hitting the beaches in our Tracks, and then doing a dog and pony for the civies there. Man we even got some killer libo down there. We got busted for drinking a margarita fish bowl in some club that was two stories tall. We put a tone of bendy straws together, and set the margarita on the lower deck, and proceded to drink it. Until the Cops showed up hahaha. Ah the memories, anywhos back on topic they ended up decomissioning that old rust bucket int 2003. Fun ship even if it was a rusty peice of shi$.

I went from Japan to Taiwan, 5 day trip, aboard the Windham County, LST 1170. Had 5 days of rough seas and twas easier to sleep on deck than in my assigned bunk. It was the first compartment just aft of the chain locker. For those of you that have been aboard LSTs, you know of what I speak. LMAO

I was on the Anchorage in 2002 for an LF CARAT float. My buddy got assigned to the wardroom and told us stories of the officers complaining that there was a water spot on their silverware and making him get them more. Personally, I spent most of my time in the well deck and sweated my ass off, getting yelled at every time I would walk towards the front to get some air!

We swapped spots with the Malaysian Marines in 2002 - we stayed on their LST for a couple days for water ops, and they stayed on the Anchorage for a couple days to do whatever it was they were doing. Since we knew they were gay, we refused to sleep in their racks and slept in the well deck instead. We would rack out on top of the AAVs and wake up to see about 15 of them staring down at us through the cargo opening above us. It was creepy because they were always there.

We splashed off of that LST in the AAVs - that was a rush! When the track hit the water, you instantly turned into a submarine! And you had to stay on the gas or you would get sucked back under the ship! Trying to hit the ramp on the way back in was almost like landing a jet on an aircraft carrier.

Here's a pic I took when I was put on gear guard for one of the water ops.

Yes it is brother, people don't realize how hard it is for us to actually get it on and off of the ship. Not easy, and is a big responsability when your a 19 year old kid, with 21 combat loaded Infantry Marines in the back counting on you to not get them killed. Yat-Yas
