NAHA, Okinawa — A Marine corporal was sentenced in Naha district court Monday to eight months in prison, suspended for three years, for possessing a small amount of marijuana.

Cpl. Richard G. Owens, 24, assigned to the 1st Marine Aircraft Wing on Camp Foster, pleaded guilty last month to having his friend mail him marijuana from Hawaii to Marine Corps Air Station Futenma.

Owens was found guilty of violating Japan’s Cannabis Control and Customs Acts. He was arrested March 3 by U.S. military authorities at the post office on MCAS Futenma after he picked up the package containing 0.17 ounce of marijuana concealed in a peanut butter jar, according to court documents.

Following his arrest, Owens was confined in the brig on Camp Hansen for 21 days and then placed on restriction pending the case’s outcome. He could still face disciplinary action by the Marines.
